Countermeasure Parts

Nissan has developed improved front brake pads for the Applied Models to reduce front brake squeal and grinding noise.

REPAIR PROCEDURE: Perform each of the following steps:

A. Install countermeasure front brake pads:

If the squeal noise is from the front brakes, install countermeasure front brake pads as listed in tne Parts Information section.

B. Add chamfer to rear pads:





If the squeal noise is from the rear pads, grind a chamfer on the leading and trailing edges of the rear brake pads as shown in Fig. 1. Observe normal safety precautions to minimize asbestos dust and fibers in the shop area.





C. Inspect/replace brake pad shims:

The condition of the rubber-covered brake shims is critical to reduce brake squeal. The shims must be installed in the proper position and the rubber must be in good condition with no nicks, cuts, or rust between the shim and rubber. Install a complete new hardware kit if any shims show any damage.

D. Apply PBC grease:

A light coating of high-viscosity grease between the pads and shims can absorb some of the vibration that causes squeal. Grease for this application must be capable of withstanding very hign temperatures. Nissan PBC grease is specially formulated for this type of application.

Apply a thin coating of PBC grease to these four areas:
- between the pad backing plate and each shim
- between the rubber-covered shim and caliper
- between the rubber-covered shim and the piston inner shim
- between the edges of the pad backing plate and the caliper bracket.


E. Special instructions for 300ZX:

Nissan has developed an improved front brake hardware kit for 300ZX Non-Turbo and 1984-86 Turbo models. This kit includes rubber-coated brake shims with slots that capture and hold PBC grease for greater vibration absorption. This kit also includes a small packet of PBC grease.





Apply this grease to the slotted shims so the slots are completely filled with grease. Apply grease to the other areas mentioned above. Be careful when assembling the shims to the pads to prevent grease from contaminating the friction material.
