SERVICE INFORMATION

FRONT SPRINGS:

Some 1985-1987 Maxima and 1987 Stanza vehicles may exhibit a metallic noise from the front suspension when driven over rough roads (potholes, broken pavement, etc.). The noise is normally heard at low speeds with the window down, and may be caused when a tire hits a pothole and the top two coils of the front springs rub each other (see illustration).
NOTE: REPLACEMENT OF THE FRONT STRUT ASSEMBLIES, COIL SPRINGS OR OTHER SUSPENSION COMPONENTS WILL NOT ELIMINATE THIS CONDITION.
If a customer complains about this condition, check for damaged/loose/worn components in the front suspension. If nothing is found, then the above condition is a probable cause of the noise. In this case, explain to the customer that a countermeasure is being developed and the noise is not an indication of suspension malfunction.
