SERVICE INFORMATION
If the power steering gear in one of the Applied Models above exhibits fluid leakage, DO NOT attempt to rebuild the gear at this time. These gears cannot be rebuilt because the end cover assembly is staked in place. This staking prevents disassembly and reuse of the end cover and cylinder assemblies. Leaking steering gears from these models should be replaced until a rebuild procedure is developed. This rebuild procedure will be contained in a subsequent Technical Bulletin. Contact your District Service Manager for prior approval of steering gear replacement.
The steering gears of 1986 Maxima vehicles built 12/85 and later can be distinguished quickly by examination. The later design gear does not have a separate aluminum cylinder end housing and it has wire boot clamps instead of metal band clamps as shown below.
