Operation 4 Install Seat Belt Anchor Plate
Kits Required: Kits A, B & C1. Remove the fuel filler tube as outlined in Fuel Filler Tube Removal.
2. In the wheel house, use a sand blaster to remove all corrosion from the wheel house, the seams and around the fuel filler area. Thoroughly clean the area to remove sand particles and dust.
3. In the trunk compartment:
A. Relocate and/or protect wiring harnesses on the left side.
B. Put a protective covering over the seat belt and speaker.
C. Use a nylon 3M Clean & Strip disc (3M P/N 051131-07460) to remove all corrosion and paint from the patch area.
D. Use a hole saw (approximately 1-1/4 in.) to cut out the weld nut area large enough to slide the weld nut on the anchor plate through the panel.
4. Position the anchor plate and drill the holes as follows:
Put the anchor plate in position, use one of the old plastic finisher clips and insert it into the anchor plate. Now attach the anchor plate to the wheel house using the plastic clip as an alignment/locating hole. Use clamps to hold the anchor plate in place. Make sure the plate tab is in the proper position (in the hole for the fuel filler door release cable). Use a 5/16 in. drill bit and drill the three holes into the wheel house for the three bolts supplied in Kit B.
IMPORTANT:
The drill depth can be no more than 2-3/4 in. to prevent damage to the quarter panel.
5. Spray a thin coat of DuPont aerosol primer (DuPont P/N 2155) on all surfaces where bare metal is exposed. Allow time for primer to dry before installing patches.
NOTE:
Check local VOC regulations for applicable products in your area.
6. If there are any perforations in the inner wheel house panel, use LORD(R) Chemicals Fusor Rigid Plastic Repair Material P/N 101 and fiber resin matting P/N 706 to patch the perforations (see Operation 3, steps 3 through 6).
A. Use a 4"x10" patch from Kit C to cover the area. It is acceptable to cover the opening from the hole saw. Do not cover the retractor tab hole or the hole where the plate locator tab goes.
B. While the patch is wet with the plastic in place, use a knife to cut out the holes covered by the patch.
C. Allow the patch to dry thoroughly.
D. If the patch dries with ridges, sand the patch smooth then wipe the area clean.
7. To patch perforations in the outer wheel house panel, perform Operation 3, steps 3 through 6.
8. If you need to layer patches in the outer wheel house area around the fuel filler hole, the order of patch installation must be as follows (see Figure 18):
A. Horizontal patch
B. Vertical patch.
9. Use a red Scotch-Brite pad to scuff the anchor plate contact surface. Also lightly scuff the panel. Clean both surfaces to remove sanding residue.
10. Apply LORD(R) Chemicals Fusor Unprimed Metal Patch Panel Bonder (adhesive) P/N 111 to the contact surface of the entire anchor plate. Do not put adhesive on the retractor tab hole (Maxima only) or the locator tab. Apply the anchor plate to the prepared inner wheel house panel. Be careful to line up all holes. Use a finisher panel clip to position the patch.
11. Hold the plate with clamps as shown. Install and tighten the three bolts and nuts in the patch through the body panel. Torque the bolts to 22 ft-lb (30 N.m). Do not remove the clamps until the adhesive is dry.
NOTE:
The adhesive will set in 10-15 minutes.
CAUTION:
Do not tighten the plate bolts after the adhesive is dry.
12. From outside the vehicle through the fuel filler hole, use Lord(R) Chemicals Fusor(R) Urethane Sealer/Adhesive P/N 800 to completely cover the hole around the weld nut. Do not cover the weld nut.
13. After the anchor plate adhesive dries, remove the clamps. Use the urethane sealer around the entire perimeter of the plate. Use a brush to smooth the sealer for good seam coverage.
14. After the seam sealer has skinned-over, install the new fuel filler tube as outlined in Fuel Filler Tube Installation. It may be necessary to re-seal any area disturbed by the fuel filler tube installation. Reinstall the fuel filler tube protective cover.
15. Install the wheel. Torque the bolts to 72-87 ft-lb (98-118 N.m). Lower the vehicle.
16. Do not install, but keep in the vehicle:
^ Seat belt anchor bolt and spacer
^ Trunk finisher
^ Trunk carpet
^ Retractor cover
^ Original fuel filler tube in the plastic bag and cardboard box for dealer pan retention.
17. Prepare the vehicle for delivery back to the dealer.
