1993-94 ALTIMA FUEL GAUGE INACCURATE
This Bulletin contains new Diagnostic Information and a revised Work Procedure concerning Service Advisory NTB93-107 (EF & EC93-005), entitled, "Fuel Tank Difficult to Fill; Fuel Gauge Inaccurate".
APPLIED MODEL:
1993-94 Altima (U13)
APPLIED V.I.N.; BUILD DATE: Prior to RC179011; 2/14/94
SERVICE INFORMATION:
Some Altima vehicles may exhibit a fuel tank which is difficult to fill or upon filling the fuel tank, the fuel gauge does not indicate that the fuel tank is full.
This Bulletin details Diagnostic Information and Work Procedures to resolve the above-described situations. These include:
^ Modifying the sending unit float arm
^ Installing a countermeasure vent hose
^ Installing a new fuel filler tube support shutter
DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION:
Use the flow chart to diagnose and repair the above-mentioned incidents:.
WORK PROCEDURE:
Installing New Countermeasure Vent Tube
1. Use Consult in "Work Support" mode to release fuel pressure, or with fuel pump fuse removed, run the engine until it stalls; then, crank the engine three (3) times and turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Use a Safety "Gas-Cart" to remove enough gasoline so that the gauge reads approximately 1/4 FULL.
3. Remove the rear seat back and cushion; then, remove the fuel tank inspection cover plate.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors with care to retain the seal material within each connector.
5. Disconnect and plug the fuel lines with a suitable plug to keep dirt out of the fuel system.
6. Special Tool J 38879-A, Fuel Tank Lock Ring Socket, to remove tank lock ring.
7. Remove the fuel sender unit and disconnect its electrical harness connector.
NOTE:
It is essential to depress the locking lever when removing or installing the fuel sender unit.
8. Carefully [avoid possible sharp metal edges] reach into the tank and remove the vent tube, located near the top of the tank by compressing the expansion clip (Figure 1).
9. Install the NEW vent tube by carefully sliding it into place against the expandable clip. To verify that the tube is securely seated into the rubber grommet at the side of the tank, apply light pressure to the body of the tube.
Installing New Countermeasure Fuel Filler Tube Support Shutter
1. Disconnect the fuel filler neck hose from the fuel tank and remove the fuel tank support tube.
2. Install the NEW fuel tank support tube with the shutter spring located at the 12 O'Clock or top position. (Figure 2)
3. Ensure that fuel tank support tube is inserted flush with the outside edge of the fuel tank inlet.
4. Installation is the reverse of removal.
