ALTIMA WIND NOISE AROUND FRONT DOOR

APPLIED MODEL:
1993-94 Altima (U13)

SERVICE INFORMATION

This bulletin applies if an owner of a 1993 or 1994 Altima complains of excessive wind noise around the front door area. This bulletin addresses some of the possible sources for U13 wind noise which when corrected can reduce the level of wind noise but, may not completely eliminate the noise.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Drive the vehicle with the customer to confirm the actual level and location of the wind noise complaint. Try to isolate the noise to a location (i.e. mirror, A-pillar, top of door glass, etc.).

2. Use the following information along with the illustrations to determine possible areas for improvements in order to reduce the level of wind noise. The procedure applies to both the right or left sides of the vehicle.

1. Door Mirror

A. Check the waist molding which overlaps the mirror base molding for possible gap (there should be no gap).

Remove the molding and locate the small piece of foam (~2Ox14x3 mm) near the front edge of the molding. Carefully move the foam piece so that it is at the top forward edge of the molding (if foam cannot be removed, obtain a similar foam piece and attach to the front edge of the molding.

Add a small amount of clear silicone sealant to the mirror base molding where the waist molding overlaps.

Reinstall the waist molding. Clean off any excess sealant on the moldings.

B. Remove the door mirror and apply a thin layer of clear silicone to the front edge of the mirror base to improve sealing between the mirror base and corner cover.

Reinstall the mirror.

2. Top Front Edge of A-Pillar

Check door to body fit and adjust door striker as needed to ensure door is flush (0 +/- 1 mm) to body. Be careful not to increase door closing effort.

3. Rear Center Door Area

Inspect the door weatherstrip for possible gap between the W/S and the door panel (> 1.O mm) near the upper rear portion of the door panel.

Apply double sided adhesive foam tape (1/8 inch thick) between the W/S and the panel to eliminate any noticeable gap.

The seal should seated against the body panel without any gap.
