Service Procedure
SERVICE PROCEDURE:1. Perform the following checks to confirm that the cable has not moved or completely separated from the guide.
^ Ensure that the metal collar is secured properly around the guide as shown in Figure 1 and that it is in good condition and is not damaged.
^ Push the cable into the guide. If you feel the cable can be pushed back into the guide, proceed to Step 6.
2. Remove the four (4) cable clamps identified in Figure 3.
3. a. Place a tape mark at the end of the cable cover to evaluate any possible movement of the cable cover from the cable guide.
Throttle Cable Test:
b. Attach a Belt Tension Gauge, Kent-Moore tool P/N J38387, to the cable with a plastic tie strap. Position the tie so that it is pushed up against the cable cover insulator when pulling on the Belt Tension Gauge (Figure 4).
4. Carefully disconnect the cable at the throttle drum end (make a mark to indicate lock nut's initial position). Remove the cable from the retaining clips, leaving the cable attached to the engine room rear wail.
5. Pull the cable with the Belt Tension Gauge such that the Gauge is parallel to the cable. using approximately 5 Kg (11 lb) of force. If the cable cover does NOT move from the cable guide, proceed to Step # 7.
6. If the cable cover pulis out of the cable guide, replace the throttle cable, P/N 18201-1E5OO. Before connecting the new cable to the throttle drum, it must be modified. Install the new cable to the engine wall; then, proceed to Step # 7.
NOTE:
The following Steps must be carefully followed to ensure that cable slack length is available between the bracket at the air cleaner [Bracket "A"] and the engine room rear wall. This slack length will prevent the cable cover from being pulled away from the cable guide during engine movement.
7. Using a tape measure, place the tape at the guide end of the cable (Do not measure from the engine room wall location) and measure 396 mm of cable length away from the guide and place a mark at that point. Measure an additional 385 mm away from the first mark and place a second mark (Figure 5).
8. Apply a thin layer of 3M Adhesion Promoter, P/N K-500 [Do not substitute. Use only this product] to the inside walls of the two (2) "clips" (slit pieces of hose), P/N 18225-1E500. Also, apply 3M K-5O0 to the areas on the cable where you made the two (2) marks, as indicated in Figure 5.
9. Before the Adhesion Promoter dries, attach the "clips" (hose pieces) over the cable, at the two locations identified in Step 8 [refer to Figure 5]. Slide the hose clamps over the cable (squeeze spring clamp apart to slip over the adjusting nuts located on the throttle drum end). Position the clamp over the "clips" (hose pieces) to secure them in place. Make sure that the tabs on the clamps are pointing downward. (Figure 6)
NOTE:
Do not substitute any other clamp (such as worm-type) in place of the spring-type clamp provided in the Kit.
10. Secure the cable into Bracket "A" and Bracket "B" with the "clip" (slit pieces of hose) on the trailing edge of each bracket (Figure 7).
11. Route and clamp the remaining cable and secure into throttle drum. Check that the throttle valve opens fully when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed and that it returns to the idle position when the pedal is released. Refer to the 1994 Altima Service Manual, FE Section, for the proper adjusting procedure for the throttle cable.
