1993-96 ALTIMA INTERMITTENT NO CRANK IN THE A/T "PARK" POSITION

APPLIED VEHICLE:
1993-96 Altima (U13) with automatic transmission (A/T)

APPLIED DATE:
Vehicles built prior to May 10, 1996

SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1993-96 Altima vehicle with A/T has an intermittent no crank condition when the shift lever is in the "Park" position, the cause may be an A/T control cable that is approximately 2 mm (0.08 in.) shorter than specification.

Use the following procedure to diagnose and repair this condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Verify the condition as follows:

1. With the engine off, place the A/T shift lever into the "Park" position.

2. Raise the vehicle on a lift. Remove the lock nut that secures the A/T control cable to the A/T manual shaft (see Figure 1).

3. Check the position of the control cable slot in relation to the pin on the manual shaft (see Figure 2).

A. If the pin is centered in the slot then the A/T control cable is the correct length and no adjustment/replacement is necessary.

B. If the pin is at the lower end of the cable slot as shown, you should replace the A/T control cable.

4. Lower the vehicle.

To replace the A/T control cable, do the procedure that follows:

1. Remove the interior trim pieces in the order specified (see Figure 3):

A. Instrument lower panel on driver's side (2 screws).

B. Cluster lid A (5 screws; disconnect the harness connectors).

C. Instrument finisher A (snap out; disconnect the harness connectors).

D. Glove box lid and glove box assembly (4 screws for lid; 8 screws for assembly).

E. A/T finisher (snap out).

F. Cluster lid C (7 screws).

G. Instrument finisher B (2 screws).

H. Audio and deck pocket (4 screws).

I. Console box (4 screws).

J. Front console box (4 screws and 2 clips).

2. Remove the A/T control cable from the shifter mechanism as shown. (see Figure 4)

A. Remove the 10 mm nut.

B. Remove the C-clip.

C. Pull the cable straight forward then lift it up out of the slot.

3. Raise the vehicle safely on a hoist. From underneath, remove the A/T control cable bracket plate from the rear engine bulkhead.

NOTE:
Pay special attention to the directional arrow for re-installation.

4. Remove the cable bracket and cable from the end.

5. Remove the intake duct and the intake resonator at the air flow meter (see Figure 5).

6. Remove the Air control cable housing from the clip beneath the air flow meter.

7. Remove the Air control cable assembly from the vehicle.

NOTE:
If the cable hangs up at the rear engine bulkhead, move it to the left of the engine control module (ECM) and push it out from inside the vehicle.

8. Install the new cable into the vehicle. Attach the cable at the Air shifter and install the nuts to secure the bracket plate at the rear engine bulkhead.

NOTE:
Be sure the arrow stamped on the bracket plate points upward.

9. Place the Air shifter into the "Park" position.

10. Install the cable into the bracket at the transmission end. Push the cable end back toward its housing then release and install it onto the manual shaft. Check to make sure the control cable slot is centered on the pin at the manual shaft (see Figure 2). If it is OK, install the lock nut.

11. Re-assemble the intake duct and the intake resonator.

12. Re-assemble the interior trim.

13. Check the cranking in neutral and park positions.
