SERVICE INFORMATION

If a 1995-97 Maxima exhibits a rattle noise in the front suspension when driving on bumpy roads, the front spring upper coil may be contacting the upper end winding of the spring and causing the rattle noise.

NOTE:
The described incident would occur when driving over many bumps, not when driving over a single bump.

Countermeasure front suspension springs are now available to resolve this incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Using the following steps, confirm the rattle noise is coming from the front suspension and occurs under the same conditions described above.

A. Listen for a rattle noise in the front suspension when driving the vehicle over a series of small bumps. It is advisable to use an electronic listening device (such as "Chassis Ears" (TM) placed near the upper front suspension springs during the test drive.

B. With the vehicle on a lift/hoist, visually inspect the front suspension springs for evidence of contact or worn away paint between the upper end winding and the coil just below it (see Figure 1).

2. If the noise, contact or worn away paint is confirmed, replace both front strut springs with the countermeasure springs. Refer to the service manual (FA section) for the replacement procedure.
