SERVICE PROCEDURE

Determine if the Whine Noise is Being Transmitted Through the A/T Cable

1. Locate the A/T cable Mass-Damper shown in Figure 1.

It's located below the battery and in front of the transmission.

2. Attach a magnet to the Mass-Damper as shown in Figure 2.

^ The magnet must weigh at least 8 ounces (200 grams).

^ As shown in Figure 2, a magnetic base from a dial indicator will work.

^ Make sure you don't let the magnet touch the cable end socket or the cable support bracket. It must hang free on the mass damper itself.

^ Use a tie-wrap to secure the magnet in place so it won't fall off during the test drive.

3. Test-drive the vehicle.

a. If the whine noise is still there, this bulletin does not apply.

^ Go to the Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnostic information.

b. If the whine noise is reduced or gone, replace the A/T control cable with the new one listed in the Parts Information.

^ See the A/T section of the Service Manual (ESM) for cable replacement information.
