SERVICE PROCEDURE

Check the current TCM part number (P/N).

IMPORTANT:
Before starting, make sure:

^ ASIST on your Toughbook(R) PC has been freshly synchronized (updated).

^ All CONSULT III (C-III) software updates (if any) have been installed.

NOTE:
C-III automatically gets applicable TCM reprogramming data from ASIST on the Toughbook(R) PC.

CAUTION
^ Connect a battery charger to the vehicle battery. If the 12V battery voltage drops during reprogramming, the TCM may be damaged.

^ Be sure to turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads. If a vehicle electrical load remains ON, the TCM may be damaged.

^ For TCM reprogramming, your CONSULT PC MUST be connected to the VI using the USB cable.

^ Be sure to connect the AC Adapter to your CONSULT PC. If CONSULT PC battery voltage drops during reprogramming, the process will be interrupted and the TCM will be damaged.

1. Make sure the C-III Security Card and PCMCIA Card Adapter are installed.

^ A screen print for Warranty documentation can be done from C-III during this process while still cable-connected to the vehicle.

2. Use the USB cable to connect the Vehicle Interface (VI) to the Toughbook(R) PC, and then connect the VI to the vehicle.

CAUTION:
For TCM reprogramming, the Toughbook(R) PC MUST be connected to the VI using the USB cable.

3. Turn the ignition ON with the engine off.

4. Open / start ASIST on the Toughbook(R) PC.

5. Click on CONSULT Utilities, and then click on CONSULT-III (picture not shown in this bulletin).

6. Wait for the "Detecting VI/MI in progress" message to clear (picture not shown in this bulletin).

7. Highlight the detected VI from the list by clicking on it (see Figure 2).

8. Click on Connect (see Figure 2).

9. Wait for the "Checking the firmware version" message to clear (picture not shown in this bulletin).

10. Select the applied vehicle (Altima, Sentra, or Rogue), and then select the model year (see Figure 3).

^ Click on and drag the scroll bars up or down to find your vehicle and model year (see Figure 3).

^ When clicked on, the Vehicle Name and Model Year will highlight (picture not shown in this bulletin).

11. Click on "Select" (see Figure 3).

12. Make sure the correct Vehicle Name and Model Year are displayed (see Figure 4).

13. Click on Confirm (see Figure 4).

14. Click on Diagnosis (see Figure 5).

15. Wait for CAN Diagnosis to reach 51% (see Figure 6).

^ When CAN diagnosis reaches 51%, the process icons in the Process Guide Area at the top of the screen will light (become enabled).

16. When the icons light, click on the "DTC" icon (see Figure 6).

^ If the "DTC" icon is not clicked on in time, the screen in Figure 7 opens up.

^ If the screen in Figure 7 opens up, click on the "DTC" icon (see Figure 7).

17. If there are NO ENGINE or TRANSMISSION DTCs other than P0840, P0845, and/or P0710, click on the "Repair" icon (see Figure 8).

^ Click on and drag the scroll bar up and down to check all systems for DTCs.

^ If there are ANY ENGINE or TRANSMISSION DTCs, diagnose, perform repairs, and erase DTCs before continuing.

^ Repair of DTCs other than P0840, P0845, and/or P0710 is not covered by this bulletin.

18. After erasing P08401 / P08451 / P0710, click on the "Reprogram" icon (see Figure 9).

19. Confirm this bulletin applies to your vehicle as follows:

a. On your C-III screen, look at the Part Number (P/N) column (see Figure 10 example):

NOTE:
The display on your C-III screen may differ.

^ If this column is blank (no P/N listed), the reprogram procedure does not apply or it has already been completed. Refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for further diagnosis.

b. Compare the P/N to the Current TCM P/N list in Table A above.

^ If there is a match, this bulletin applies.

^ Print a copy of the current TCM P/N. Keep with the vehicle's repair order / records.

^ If there is not a match, this bulletin does not apply. Refer to the ESM for further diagnosis. Print out a copy of the TCM P/N. Keep with the vehicle's repair order / records.

20. Reprogram the TCM.

21. If you are not familiar with either TCM reprogramming or initialization, refer to the "CONSULT-III (C-III) Transmission Control Module (TCM) Reprogramming" general procedure.

22. Write down all radio station presets.

23. Replace the CVT assembly.

^ Refer to the appropriate ESM for removal and installation procedures.

^ Do not fill with CVT fluid at this time.

24. Perform TCM initialization.

25. Clean the oil cooler(s) and lines.

^ For Altima, refer the appropriate ESM.

^ For Sentra, refer to the same model year Altima ESM.

^ For Rogue, refer to the appropriate ESM.

NOTE:
Some Rogue models have two coolers. Make sure to clean both, if applicable.

26. Remove and discard the existing CVT oil level gauge (dipstick).

^ Replace it with the dipstick P/N listed in the PARTS INFORMATION section of this bulletin.

27. Fill / adjust the fluid level as follows:

a. Park the vehicle on level ground.

b. Firmly apply the parking brake.

c. Move the A/T shift lever in "P" range.

d. Start the engine, let it continue to idle.

e. Using C-III, monitor A/T fluid temperature until ATF TEMP COUNT reaches 161 (80°C, 176°F).

NOTE:
The vehicle can be driven to warm up ATF temp more quickly.

f. At the count/temp noted in step 27e, adjust ATF level halfway between the "L" and "H" marks on the dipstick.

28. Reprogram the radio presets.

29. Reset / initialize all applied systems i.e., power windows, clock, sunroof, etc.

^ Refer to the ESM as needed.

30. Test drive the vehicle and make sure it operates correctly.
