Engine Removal and Installation

Remove or Disconnect

Tools Required:
J-26996 Screen Cover

1. Negative battery cables.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Upper radiator support
4. Air cleaner and install cover J-26996.
5. Scribe hood hinge location and remove hood.
6. Engine ground strap
7. Fan and fan shroud together
8. Upper and lower radiator hose at engine
9. Transmission and engine oil cooler lines at the radiator
10. Heater hose at water pump and water control valve
11. Generator with the upper brace
12. Power steering pump bracket. Do not disconnect oil lines. Place pump aside to gain access.
13. (Air conditioning) A/C compressor bracket from engine. Do not disconnect lines. Place compressor and brackets aside to gain access.
14. Fuel lines. Cap or plug lines.
15. T.V. cable
16. Vacuum hoses
17. Electrical connections
18. Cooler line bracket
19. L.H. exhaust pipe from manifold and upper mount heat shield
20. On left side, through bolt and bracket securing final drive to engine
21. Raise and support car.
22. Splash shield
23. Flywheel shield. Bolts can be loosened using a 3/8 x 24" extension with a 7/16" socket.
24. R.H. exhaust pipe at manifold
25. Starter wiring
26. Starter
27. Three converter to flywheel bolts. Mark or scribe for reassembly.
28. Lower car partially.
29. Right front wheel
30. Right exhaust manifold
31. Oil filter adapter
32. Raise and support car.
33. Two bolts securing R.H. output shaft support brackets
Important
^ Using a sharp awl, scribe as far around the washers as possible. This will assure original alignment, when replacing the bracket.

34. Lower R.H. transmission to engine bolts
35. Attach final drive support chain.
36. Lower car and attach lifting chain to engine.
37. Move the engine oil cooler pipes rearward and remove the radiator.
38. Water control valve
39. Five remaining transmission to engine bolts. It may be necessary to raise or lower transmission, using a floor jack with a wood block between jack and transmission.
40. Raise engine from engine compartment. Place on engine stand.

Install or Connect
1. Lower engine into engine compartment.
2. Transmission, five bolts
3. Water control valve
4. Radiator
5. Remove engine lifting chain.
6. Raise and support car.
7. Remove final drive support chain
8. Lower R.H. transmission to engine bolts.
9. R.H. output shaft support brackets
10. Lower car.
11. Oil filter adapter
12. R.H. exhaust manifold
13. Raise car partially.
14. R.F. wheel
15. Raise and support car.
16. Converter, three bolts
17. Starter
18. Starter wiring
19. R.H. exhaust pipe
20. Flywheel shield
21. Splash shield
22. Lower car.
23. Final drive
24. L.H. exhaust pipe
25. Cooler line bracket
26. Wiring
27. Vacuum hoses
28. Accelerator cable
29. Fuel lines
30. (Air conditioning) A/C compressor and bracket
31. Power steering pump and bracket
32. Generator with upper brace
33. Heater hoses
34. Oil cooler lines
35. Radiator hoses
36. Fan and fan shroud
37. Engine ground strap
38. Hood
39. Air cleaner. Remove screen cover J-26996.
40. Upper radiator support
41. Negative battery cable
42. Fill radiator.
43. Fill crankcase.

Inspect
