Removal and Replacement

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Tools Required:
^ J-28467 Engine Support.
^ J-33162 Drive Axle Boot Seal Protectors.
^ J-28468 Axle Shaft Removal Tool.
^ J-2619-01 Slide Hammer.


REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner assembly.








3. T.V. cable at throttle lever and transaxle.
4. Fluid level indicator and fill tube.
5. Install engine support.





6. Insert 1/4" x 2" bolt in hole at front right motor mount to maintain driveline alignment.
7. Nut securing wiring harness to transaxle.
8. Wiring connectors at:
^ Speed sensor.
^ TCC connector.
^ Park-Neutral-Backup lamp switch (may be easier to reach when car is raised).





IMPORTANT
^ When servicing requires that the "T" latch type wiring connector be disconnected from the switch, care must be taken to ensure proper reassembly of both the connector and the "T" latch. Failure to do so may result in intermittent loss of switch functions.

9. Shift linkage from transaxle.





10. Top two (2) transaxle-to-engine bolts and left upper transaxle mount and bracket assembly.





11. Rubber hose from transaxle to vent pipe.





12. Remaining upper engine-to-transaxle bolts.
13. Raise car.
14. Both tire and wheel assemblies.
15. Drain transmission fluid.
16. Shift linkage and bracket from transaxle.
17. Install drive axle boot seal protector J-33162 on inner seals, if required.

NOTICE: Some cars may use a silicone (gray) boot on the inboard axle joint. Use J-33162 on these boots, all other boots are made from a thermo-plastic material (black) and do not require use of a boot seal protector.

18. Both balljoints from control arms.
19. Both drive axles and support.





20. Transaxle mounting strut.
21. Left stabilizer bar link pin bolt.
22. Left stabilizer bar frame bushing clamp nuts.
23. Left frame support assembly.
24. Transaxle converter cover.





25. Torque converter-to-flexplate bolts.

IMPORTANT
^ Using a scribe, mark the flexplate-to-torque converter relationship to assure proper reassembly.

26. Transaxle cooler pipes and plug to prevent leakage.
27. Transaxle to engine support bracket.
28. Position jack under transaxle.
29. Remaining engine-to-transaxle bolts.
30. Transaxle.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Place a small amount of light grease on the torque converter pilot hub.
^ Properly seat the torque converter in the oil pump.

2. Position transaxle in car.
3. Lower engine-to-transaxle bolts and remove jack from transaxle.
4. Transaxle-to-engine support bracket.
5. Transaxle cooler pipes.
6. Torque converter-to-flexplate bolts.

Tighten
^ All bolts to 62 N.m (46 lbs. ft.). Retighten the first bolt after all three have been tightened.

7. Transaxle converter cover.
8. Left frame support assembly.
9. Left stabilizer bar frame bushing nuts.
10. Stabilizer bar link pin bolt.
11. Transaxle mounting strut.
12. Drive axles and seat into case.
13. Both ball joints to control arms.
14. Remove drive axle boot seal protectors.
15. Shift linkage bracket to transaxle.
16. Both tire and wheel assemblies.
17. Lower car.
18. Upper engine-to-transaxle bolts.
19. Left side transaxle mount.
20. Shift linkage to transaxle.
21. Wiring connectors at:
^ Speed sensor.
^ TCC connector.
^ Park-Neutral-Backup lamp switch (may be easier to reach when the car is raised).

22. Wiring harness and nut securing switch to transaxle.
23. Remove alignment bolt from right motor mount.
24. Remove engine support.
25. Fluid level indicator and fill tube.
26. T.V. cable at transaxle and throttle lever.
27. Rubber hose to transaxle vent pipe.
28. Air cleaner assembly.
29. Negative battery cable.
30. Transmission fluid.

ADJUST
^ T.V. cable.
^ Shift control cable.
^ Fluid level.
