Front Wheel Drive Transmission
FRONT-WHEEL-DRIVE TRANSMISSION REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
Tools Required:
^ J-22825-02 Engine Holding Fixture
^ J-26996-1 Cover
NOTE: Before removing the transmission for repair, be sure to thoroughly diagnose any problems. A pressure test should be performed and records of the pressures should be kept.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
^ Speedometer cable at transmission.
^ Air cleaner.
2. T.V. cable from the cable actuating lever.
^ Top left Final Drive to transmission bolt.
^ Five accessible transmission to engine bolts.
3. Air line to catalytic converter.
^ Bolt on back of engine to air tube from catalytic converter.
4. Raise and support car.
5. Shift cable.
^ Starter assembly.
^ TCC wiring at transmission.
^ Fluid cooler lines. Plug openings.
6. Lower torque converter cover, three bolts, left upper bolt and cover.
^ Mark relationship of flexplate and torque converter to aid in re-assembly.
^ Flexplate to torque converter, three bolts.
7. "Y" connector from exhaust pipe.
^ Catalytic converter.
8. Crossmember, four bolts.
9. Position transmission jack.
10. RH transmission mount through bolt.
^ RH transmission mount bracket, three bolts.
^ RH bottom transmission to engine bolt.
11. Remaining Final Drive to transmission bolts.
^ LH transmission mount through bolt.
^ LH transmission mount bracket, six bolts.
^ Move transmission 25 mm (1") away from frame to gain access.
12. Lower transmission.
^ Separate Final Drive.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Place transmission on transmission jack.
^ Align Final Drive to transmission mounting faces.
^ Raise transmission sufficiently to engage Final Drive splines.
- Use new gaskets.
^ Torque Final Drive attaching bolts to specification.
2. LH transmission mount bracket to transmission and frame, six bolts.
^ LH transmission mount through bolt.
3. RH bottom transmission to engine bolt.
^ RH transmission mount bracket, three bolts.
^ RH transmission mount through bolt.
4. Remove transmission jack.
5. Crossmember, four bolts.
6. Catalytic converter.
^ "Y" exhaust connector.
7. Torque converter to flexplate.
^ Observe marks made during disassembly and line up in the original position.
^ Make sure weld nuts on the torque converter are flush with the flexplate.
^ Test torque converter for freedom of rotation.
^ Tighten all bolts finger tight, then torque to 47 N.m (35 lbs. ft.).
^ Torque converter cover.
8. Fluid cooler lines.
^ TCC wiring.
^ Shift cable.
^ Starter assembly.
9. Lower car.
10. Catalytic converter air tube to engine, one bolt.
^ Air line to catalytic converter.
11. Remaining transmission to engine bolts, torque to specification.
^ Top left Final Drive to transmission bolt, torque to specification.
12. T.V. cable.
13. Air cleaner.
^ Speedometer cable.
^ Negative battery cable.
ADJUST
^ Shift linkage.
^ T.V. cable.
^ Transmission fluid level.
