Removal and Replacement

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION


Tools Required:
^ J-28467 Engine Support.
^ J-26996-1 Air Crossover Cover.
^ J-33162 Drive Axle Boot Seal Protector.


REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Raise hood and cover fenders.
2. Negative battery cable.







3. T.V. cable at injection pump and transaxle.
4. Shift control cable.
5. Wiring connectors at:
^ Park-Neutral-Backup lamp switch.
^ Transaxle converter clutch.
^ Vehicle speed sensor.

6. Vacuum modulator hose at modulator.
7. Exhaust crossover pipe shield.
8. EGR valve and pipe if equipped with External EGR.
9. Exhaust crossover pipe at left bank. Loosen exhaust crossover pipe at right bank. Swing pipe up out of way and tighten at right bank.
10. Three upper engine to transaxle bolts.
11. Engine support.
12. Unlock steering column.
13. Raise car.
14. Front tire and wheel assemblies.
15. Install drive axle boot seal protectors.

NOTICE: Some cars may use a silicone (gray) boot on the inboard axle joint. Use J-33162 on these boots, all other boots are made from a thermo-plastic material (black) and do not require use of a boot seal protector.

16. Right side of stabilizer bar.
17. Right front ball joint from knuckle.
18. Right drive axle from transaxle.





19. Left front and rear transaxle-to-frame mounts.








20. Right side transaxle brace-to-engine bolts.





21. Right side rear mounting bracket bolts from transaxle.
22. Left side of stabilizer bar.





23. Flywheel cover.
24. Flywheel to torque converter bolts.
25. Bolts attaching rear frame member to front frame dog leg. Loosen stabilizer mount bolt.
26. Right front frame-to-rear dog leg bolts.
27. Left front frame-to-body bolt.
28. Front motor mount-to-frame bolts, loosen mount to engine bolts.
29. Wiring harness cover on frame and position out of way.
30. Install jack to transaxle.
31. Left side brake line bracket bolt.
32. Left drive axle from transaxle, position frame assembly to the side and support drive axle and frame.
33. Cooler lines and plug pipes.
34. Remaining engine-to-transaxle bolts.

IMPORTANT
^ One bolt is installed in the opposite direction.

35. Lower transaxle.

IMPORTANT
^ Use care to avoid damaging right hand output shaft, shaft seal, hoses, lines and wiring while lowering transaxle.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Raise transaxle into position.

IMPORTANT
^ Use care to avoid damaging right hand output shaft, shaft seal, hoses, lines and wiring while raising transaxle.

2. Lower engine-to-transaxle bolts.
3. Cooler lines.
4. Reposition frame assembly under transaxle while engaging left drive axle into transaxle.
5. Left side brake line bracket bolt.
6. Remove jack from transaxle.
7. Wiring harness cover to frame.
8. Front motor mount-to-frame bolts and mount-to-engine bolts.
9. Left front frame-to-body bolt.
10. Right front frame-to-rear dog leg bolts.
11. Bolts attaching rear frame member to front frame dog leg and install stabilizer mount bolt.
12. Flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.

Tighten
^ All bolts to 62 N.m (46 lbs. ft.). Retighten the first bolt after all three have been tightened.

13. Flywheel cover.
14. Left side of stabilizer bar.
15. Right side rear mounting bracket bolts from transaxle.
16. Right side transaxle brace-to-engine bolts.
17. Left front and rear transaxle-to-frame mounts.
18. Right drive axle to transaxle.
19. Right front ball joint to knuckle.
20. Right side of stabilizer bar.
21. Remove drive axle boot seal protectors.
22. Front tire and wheel assemblies.
23. Lower car.
24. Engine support.
25. Remaining engine to transaxle bolts.
26. Exhaust crossover pipe.
27. EGR valve and pipe if equipped with External EGR.
28. Exhaust crossover pipe shield.
29. Vacuum modulator hose at modulator.
30. Wiring connectors at:
^ Park-Neutral-Backup lamp switch.





IMPORTANT
^ When servicing requires that the "T"-Latch type wiring connector be disconnected from the switch, care must be taken to ensure proper reassembly of both the connector and the "T"-Latch. Failure to do so may result in intermittent loss of switch functions.
^ Vehicle speed sensor.
^ Transaxle converter clutch.

31. Shift control linkage.
32. T.V. cable at injection pump and transaxle.
33. Negative battery cable.

ADJUST
^ Fluid level.
^ T.V. cable.
^ Shift control cable.
