Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Tools Required:
^ J-28467 Engine Support
^ J-33008 Axle Shaft Remover
^ J-2619-01 Slide Hammer


REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable from transaxle and tape end of cable.
2. Air cleaner.
3. Routing clips or straps.

4. Bolt securing T.V. cable to transaxle.
5. Raise car.
6. Strut shock bracket bolts from transaxle.
7. Oil cooler lines from strut bracket.
8. Transaxle to engine bolts leaving two (2) installed.
9. Speedometer drive cable at transaxle.
10. Wiring connectors at:
^ TCC connector.
^ Park-Neutral-Backup lamp switch.

11. Shift linkage retaining clip and washer at transaxle.
12. Shift linkage bracket bolts.
13. Oil cooler lines at transaxle.
14. Front and left sections of frame.

CAUTION: Failing to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in an accident and possibly personal injury.

15. Install drive axle boot seal protectors if required.

NOTICE: Some cars may use a silicone (gray) boot on the inboard axle joint. Use J-33162 on these boots, all other boots are made from a thermo-plastic material (black) and do not require use of a boot seal protector.

^ Position tool J-33008 and slide hammer J-2619-01 assembly behind axle shaft cones and pull cones away from transaxle.
^ Pull left axle shaft out of transaxle and plug bore in transaxle to minimize fluid leakage.
^ Rotate strut assembly so axle shaft is out of the way.

16. Starter and converter shields.
17. Three flexplate to converter bolts.
18. Two transaxle extension bolts from engine-to-transaxle bracket.





19. Rear transaxle mount bracket assembly (it may be necessary to raise transaxle).
20. Attach jack to transaxle case.





21. Two (2) braces to right end of transaxle bolts.
22. Remaining transaxle to engine bolts.
23. Slide transaxle away from engine.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Attach jack to transaxle.
2. Raise transaxle.
3. Line up and insert RH drive axle while transaxle is being raised into place.
4. Two (2) transaxle-to-engine bolts.
5. Brace(s) to right end of transaxle.
6. Remove jack.
7. Rear transaxle mount bracket assembly.
8. Two transaxle extension bolts from engine to transaxle bracket.
9. Three flexplate to converter bolts.

Tighten
^ All flexplate-to-converter bolts to 62 N.m (46 lbs. ft.). Retighten the first bolt after all three have been tightened.

10. Starter and converter shields.
11. LH drive axle.
12. Remove axle shaft boot seal protectors.
13. Front and left sections or frame.
14. Oil cooler lines to transaxle.
15. Shift linkage bracket.
16. Shift linkage.
17. Speedometer drive cable.
18. Wiring connectors at:
^ TCC connector.
^ Park-Neutral-Backup lamp switch.





IMPORTANT
^ When servicing requires that the "T" latch type wiring connector be disconnected from the switch, care must be taken to ensure proper reassembly of both the connector and the "T" latch. Failure to do so may result in intermittent loss of switch functions.

19. Remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts and tighten all bolts to 75 N.m (55 lbs. ft.).
20. Oil cooler lines to strut bracket.
21. Strut shock bracket bolts to transaxle and tighten to specifications.
22. Lower car.
23. Transaxle end of cable to T.V. link and secure to transaxle case with bolt and washer assembly. Tighten to 10 N.m (89 lb. in.).
24. Cable routing clips or straps.
25. Air cleaner.
26. Negative battery cable.

ADJUST
1. Shift control cable.
2. T.V. Cable.
3. Fluid level.
