Engine: Service and Repair

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Battery cables from battery.
2. Air cleaner.
3. Drain cooling system.
4. Engine strut bracket from radiator support and swing to the rear.
5. Air conditioning
^ AIR pump and bracket.
^ A/C compressor from mounting bracket and lay aside.
6. Vacuum hoses.
7. Accelerator cable and T.V. cable (Automatic Transaxle).
8. Engine harness from ECM. Pull connector through front of dash.
9. Engine harness from junction block at left side of dash panel.
10. Radiator hoses from radiator.
11. Heater hoses from engine.
12. Power steering pump and bracket assembly.
13. Fuel lines at rubber hose connections at left side of engine.
14. Raise vehicle.
15. Engine front mount to cradle retaining nuts (right side of vehicle).
16. Battery cables from engine (Starter and transaxle housing bolt).
17. Starter
18. Transaxle inspection cover and disconnect torque converter from flex plate (automatic transaxle).
19. Crankshaft pulley.
20. Accessory drive belts.
21. Exhaust pipe.
22. Lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (backside of engine).
23. Power steering cut-off switch.
24. Lower car.
25. Exhaust crossover pipe.
26. Remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts.

NOTE Make note of ground stud location.

27. Support the transaxle rear extension.
28. Engine assembly using suitable lifting device.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Lower engine into car.
2. Line up transaxle with engine and install.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lb.).
3. Locate front engine mount studs in both the cradle and engine bracket and lower engine (right side of vehicle).
4. Raise vehicle.
5. Air conditioning - compressor on mounting bracket.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 40-54 Nm (30-40 ft. lb.)
6. Engine front mount retaining nuts to both the cradle and engine bracket.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 95-125 Nm (70-92 ft. lb.)
7. Power steering pump and bracket assembly using lower adjusting nut (do not tighten).
8. Power steering cut-off switch, if so equipped.
9. Lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (back side of engine).
10. Exhaust pipe.
11. Crankshaft pulley.
Tighten
^ Bolt to 27-41 Nm (20-30 ft. lb.)
12. Automatic Transaxle
^ Torque converter-to-flex plate bolts.
^ Inspection cover.
13. Starter
Tighten
^ Bolts to 36-50 Nm (26-37 ft. lb.)
14. Battery cable at starter.
15. Lower car.
16. Exhaust crossover pipe.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 34 Nm (25 ft. lb.)
17. Fuel lines.
18. Power Steering - remaining power steering pump bolts. (do not tighten).
19. Heater and radiator hoses
20. Engine harness to junction block and ECM.
21. Accelerator cable and T.V. cable (automatic transaxle).
22. Vacuum hoses.
23. Wire connectors.
24. Air conditioning compressor and mounting bracket.
Tighten
^ Bracket bolts to 27-41 Nm (20-30 ft. lb.)
25. Air pump and bracket.
26. Engine strut bracket to radiator support.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft. lb.)
27. Fill cooling system.
28. Air cleaner.
29. All belts.
30. Battery cables.

ADJUST
^ Accessory Drive Belts
^ Alternator
- New 650 (145 lb.)
- Used 300 (70 lb.)
^ Power Steering
- New 600 (135 lb.)
- Used 300 (70 lb.)
^ Air Conditioning
- New 650 (145 lb.)
- Used 300 (70 lb.)
^ A.I.R. Pump
- New 450 (100 lb.)
- Used 200 (50 lb.)
INSPECT
^ Engine Oil Level
^ Leaks
