Dealer's Letter

TO ALL OLDSMOBILE DEALERS July 1989

Oldsmobile Division is releasing campaign 88-C-07 involving some 1984 through 1988 Oldsmobile model vehicles equipped with cruise control (RPO K34) on certain gasoline & diesel engines. A small nylon bushing in the cruise control servo bail (bracket) may slip out of place. This will not affect the operation of the cruise control, but it may cause intermittent increases in engine speed or dieseling (engine run-on with ignition off). If the vehicle is not serviced and the nylon bushing remains out of place, the servo rod assembly could wear through the bail. If the rod wears through the bail, it may catch on other engine components and possibly result in a stuck throttle. Although the vehicle can still be stopped with the service brake, an unexpected loss of accelerator control could result in a vehicle crash.

To prevent the possibility of this occurring, dealers are to install a Bushing Kit on vehicles involved as directed in Product Campaign Bulletin 88-C-07.

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides each vehicle subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair (Prima facie evidence of failure to repair is 60 days). Otherwise, the owner may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price, less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

To avoid providing burdensome solutions, every effort must be made to promptly schedule and repair each owner's vehicle. The letter to owners (copy attached) suggests they contact the nearest Oldsmobile Zone Office if you do not remedy the condition within five days of the mutually agreed service date. Owners are also told how to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Two Product Campaign Bulletins 88-C-07. Copy of Owner Letter.
Dealers with vehicles to correct will also receive one Printout of Vehicle Identification Numbers, owner names and addresses in VIN sequence. This data will enable you to follow-up with involved owners.

We urge you to limit the use of the printout to the follow-up needed for this campaign. Names and addresses from State Vehicle Registration files may be included; it is illegal in many states to use such data outside of campaigns.
