Dash Panel Service


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove screws attaching speaker grilles to instrument panel pad.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors, then remove speakers along with grilles.
4. With glove compartment open, remove compartment to instrument panel attaching screws.
5. Slide steering column collar up the steering column.
6. To remove steering column trim cover, pull back gently.
7. On models equipped with a gauge cluster, remove cluster as follows:
a. Remove four gauge cluster to left trim panel attaching screws.
b. Pull cluster out far enough to reach behind it and disconnect wiring terminals and both lamp sockets.
c. Remove cluster from trim panel.
8. On all models, remove headlight switch knob by depressing the retaining clip with a small screwdriver while pulling on the knob.
9. Remove two screws attaching left side trim plate to cluster carrier.

10. Remove trim plate by pulling to disengage clips, Fig. 24.
11. Remove radio knobs, cigar lighter and rear window defogger knob.
12. Remove right side trim plate to carrier panel attaching screws, then remove trim plate, Fig. 25.
13. Remove screws attaching left side sound insulator to instrument panel, remove insulator, Fig. 26.
14. Remove screws attaching right side sound insulator to instrument panel, remove insulator, Fig. 27.
15. Remove ashtray and parking brake release cable at parking brake lever assembly.
16. Remove lower trim panel, Fig. 28, as follows:
a. Remove eleven screws attaching lower trim panel to cluster carrier, Fig. 29.
b. Remove lower tie bar, then the lower left and center air ducts.
c. Remove ashtray retainer, then the ALDL connector.
d. Lower trim panel by sliding it rearward and downward.
e. Disconnect parking brake release cable from lower trim panel by depressing both locking tabs and pushing cable through mounting hole.
17. Remove thirteen screws attaching instrument panel pad to tie bars, then the pad.
18. Disconnect shift indicator cable clip from the shift bowl.
19. Remove two steering column supporting nuts, then lower column.
20. Remove two screws attaching cluster carrier to cruise module and reminder package mounting bracket.
21. Remove headlamp switch mounting bracket and rear window defogger switch.
22. Remove speedometer, then the shift indicator cable at the shift indicator.
23. Remove right side mirror control, heater and A/C control and rear window switch.
24. Remove radio mounting plate and screw attaching cluster carriage to radio mounting bracket.
25. Remove nine screws attaching cluster carrier to instrument panel supports.
26. Pull cluster carrier rearward far enough to reach behind it and disconnect circuit board wiring connector.
27. Remove three screws attaching center air duct to cluster carrier, then disconnect cluster connector.
28. Remove three screws attaching instrument panel wiring harness to the left side of cluster carrier.
29. Release retaining clips attaching instrument panel wiring harness to right side of cluster carrier.
30. Remove cluster carrier from vehicle.
31. Reverse procedure to install.
