Removal and Replacement
TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATIONTools Required:
^ J-28467-A Engine Support Fixture
^ J-34754 Drive Axle Seal Protector
^ J-36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg
^ J-35944 Oil Cooler and Line Flusher
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable from transaxle and tape end of cable.
2. Install engine support fixture J-28467-A and J-36462.
3. Air cleaner.
4. T.V. cable routing clips or straps.
5. Bolt securing T.V. cable to transaxle.
6. Shift cable.
7. Strut shock bracket bolts from transaxle.
8. Electrical connector at park/neutral switch. TCC and speedometer speed sensor.
9. Oil cooler pipes from transaxle bracket. Cap or plug lines to prevent leakage.
10. Transaxle to engine bolts leaving the bolt near the starter loosely installed.
11. Shift linkage bracket.
12. Shift linkage bracket bolts.
13. Oil cooler pipes at transaxle.
14. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
15. Front and left sections of the frame.
CAUTION: Failing to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control, which could result in personal injury.
16. Intermediate shaft to steering gear stub shaft retaining bolt.
17. Drive axle.
^ Plug bore in transaxle to minimize fluid loss.
^ Rotate strut assembly so axle shaft is out of the way.
18. Starter and converter shields.
19. Three flywheel to converter bolts.
20. Two transaxle extension bolts from engine to transaxle bracket.
21. Rear transaxle mount bracket assembly. (It may be necessary to raise transaxle.)
22. Attach transaxle jack to transaxle case.
23. Two braces to right end of transaxle bolts.
24. Remaining transaxle to engine bolt located near the starter.
25. Slide transaxle toward driver's side, away from the engine.

INSPECT
^ For inspection and overhaul procedures, refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.
CLEAN
^ Transaxle oil cooler and lines should be flushed with J-35944 of equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement of the torque converter, pump or case.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Attach transaxle jack.
2. Raise transaxle.
3. Line up and insert RH axle shaft while transaxle is being raised into place.
4. Transaxle to engine bolt near the starter, finger tight.
5. Two braces to right end of transaxle bolts.
6. Remove transaxle jack.
7. Rear transaxle mount bracket assembly.
8. Two transaxle extension bolts from engine to transaxle bracket.
9. Three flywheel to converter bolts.
Tighten
^ Bolts to 62 N.m (46 lb. ft. ). Re-torque the first bolt after all three have been tightened.
10. Starter and converter shields.
11. LH axle shaft.
12. Remove axle shaft seal protectors.
CAUTION: When installing the intermediate shaft make sure the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two mating shafts may disengage.
13. Steering gear intermediate shaft.
Tighten
^ Bolt to 54 N.m (40 lb. ft.).
14. Front and left sections of frame.
15. Oil cooler pipes to transaxle.
16. Shift linkage bracket.
17. Shift linkage.
18. Speedometer speed sensor wiring connector.
19. TCC connector.
20. Remaining transaxle to engine bolts.
Tighten
^ Bolt to 75 N.m (55 lb. ft.).
21. Oil cooler pipes to strut bracket.
22. Strut shock bracket bolts to transaxle.
23. Lower vehicle.
24. Electrical connections for park/neutral start and backup lamp switch.
25. Transaxle end of cable to T.V. link.
26. T.V. cable routing clips or straps.
27. Air cleaner.
28. Remove engine support fixture J 28467-A and J 36462.
29. Negative battery cable.
ADJUST
1. Shift linkage.
2. T.V. cable.
3. Fluid level.
INSPECT
^ For proper completion of repairs.
^ For fluid leaks.
