Removal and Replacement

TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Tools Required:
^ J-28467-A Engine Support Fixture
^ J-34754 Drive Axle Seal Protector
^ J-25044 Oil Cooler and Line Flusher
^ J-36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Air cleaner and T.V. cable at carburetor or throttle body.
3. Shift cable at transaxle lever and remove cable from mounting bracket.





4. Install J-28467-A and J-36462.
5. Electrical connectors.





6. Three bolts from transaxle to engine.
7. Vacuum line at modulator.
8. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
9. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
10. Pinch bolt from lower ball joint. Refer to Front Suspension.
11. Brake line bracket at strut.

NOTICE: Drive axle seal protector J-34754 should be modified and installed on any drive axle prior to service procedures on or near the drive axle. Failure to observe this can result in seal damage and possible joint failure. Refer to Drive Axle for information on tool J-34754 and for proper drive axle removal and handling procedures.

12. Drive axles from transaxle.








13. Frame to stabilizer bolts.
14. Stabilizer bolts at control arm.
15. Left front frame assembly.
16. Speed sensor wiring harness from transaxle.





17. Extension housing to engine block support bracket.





18. Oil cooler lines and support bracket.
19. Right and left insulator attaching bolts.
20. Flywheel splash shield.





21. Converter to flywheel bolts.
22. Remaining transaxle to engine bolts except one.
23. Position jack under transaxle.
24. Transaxle to engine bolt.
25. Transaxle assembly.

INSPECT
^ For inspection and overhaul procedures. Refer to Transaxle Disassembly/Assembly or Overhaul.

CLEAN
^ Transaxle oil cooler and lines should be flushed with J-35044 or equivalent whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement of the torque converter, pump or case.


INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Transaxle assembly.
2. Transaxle to engine lower bolts.

Tighten
^ Bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb. ft.) 3 Converter to flywheel bolts.

Tighten
^ All bolts to 62 N.m (46 lb. ft.). Re-torque the first bolt after all three have been tightened.

4. Flywheel splash shield.
5. Right and left insulator attaching bolts.

Tighten
^ Bolts to 55 N.m (40 lb. ft.).

6. Oil cooler lines and support bracket.
7. Extension housing support bracket.
8. Speed sensor harness.
9. Frame assembly.
10. Stabilizer shaft.
11. Fully seat drive axles.
12. Brake line bracket at strut.
13. Pinch bolt and nut at steering knuckle.
14. Left front wheel and tire assembly.
15. Lower vehicle.
16. Vacuum line at modulator.
17. Remaining transaxle to engine bolts.

Tighten
^ Bolts to 75 N.m (55 lb. ft.)

18. Remove J-28467-A and J-36462
19. Electrical connectors.
20. Shift linkage at transaxle.
21. T.V. cable.
22. Air cleaner and negative battery cable.

ADJUST
^ Fluid level.
^ T.V. cable.
^ Shift linkage.

INSPECT
^ For proper completion of repairs.
^ For fluid leaks.
