CORP.REF.NO: 236113

DATE: November 1992

SECTION: 6

SUBJECT:
OIL LEAKS FROM REAR OF ENGINE
- REPLACE PLUG

MODELS/YEARS:
1992 CUSTOM CRUISER WITH FLINT BUILT 5.0L AND 5.7L (VIN E, 7) ENGINES

CONDITION:
Some 1992 Custom Cruisers with Flint built engines may exhibit an oil leak from the rear of the engine. Flint built engines will have the letter "V" as the first digit of the engine serial number stamped on the engine block forward of the right hand cylinder head. Some of these leaks may be misdiagnosed as a rear main crankshaft seal or oil pan gasket leak.

CAUSE:
Insufficient sealant around the camshaft plug, P/N 3997752, at the rear of the engine block.

CORRECTION:
Before making repairs for rear main crankshaft seal or oil pan gasket leaks, check the cam plug by disconnecting the transmission and visually inspecting for oil leaks around the cam plug. Replace the plug if necessary. Use the following procedure to install a new plug:

^ Coat plug outside diameter with GM part number 12346004 sealant or equivalent which is currently available from GMSPO.

^ Install plug flush to 0.79 mm (1/32 inch) deep.
