Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Cylinder Head Tightening Sequence & Torque Specifications:
Fig. 7 Rocker Arm Cover, Rocker Arms & Pushrod Replacement:
SPECIAL TOOL REQUIRED (or equivalent)
^ J-36660 Torque/Angle meter.
NOTES:
^ Before removing the cylinder head from the engine and before disassembling the valve mechanism, run a compression test and note the results.
^ During disassembly of the cylinder head, be sure that the valve train components are kept together and identified so that they can be installed in their original locations.
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative battery cable and drain coolant.
2. Air cleaner and duct assembly.
3. Air inlet resonator at upper tie bar and lower air inlet duct.
4. Drive belt and alternator.
5. Power steering pump and position aside.
6. Spark plug wires.
7. Throttle control cable bracket at throttle body and rocker cover.
8. Rocker arms.
9. Electrical connections from:
^ Intake manifold.
^ Throttle body.
^ Cylinder head.
^ Oxygen sensor.
10. Power steering pump bracket from intake manifold brace, located under intake manifold.
11. Engine strut bracket from engine and engine strut.
12. Alternator rear bracket at engine.
13. Necessary vacuum lines at intake manifold.
14. Upper radiator hose and heater hose from engine.
15. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
16. Exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
17. Lower vehicle.
18. Relieve fuel pressure and disconnect fuel lines at quick disconnects.
19. Transaxle fluid level indicator tube out from intake manifold.
20. Cylinder head bolts and cylinder head with remaining components attached.
Clean
^ Mating surfaces on cylinder head, cylinder block and intake manifold.
^ Cylinder block bolt threads.
^ Cylinder head bolts.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. New gasket over dowel pins in cylinder block.
2. Cylinder head into place over dowel pins and tighten head bolts finger tight.
3. Torque cylinder head short bolts gradually to 58 Nm (43 lb ft) and long bolts gradually to 63 Nm (46 lb ft) in sequence shown in figure 1. Repeat sequence, turning all bolts 90° using J-36660.
4. Transaxle fluid level indicator tube nut to intake manifold.
5. Fuel lines.
6. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
7. Exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold.
8. Lower vehicle.
9. Upper radiator hose and heater hose to engine.
10. Vacuum lines to intake manifold.
11. Engine strut.
12. Generator rear bracket to engine.
13. Engine strut bracket to engine.
14. Power steering pump bracket to intake manifold brace, located under intake manifold.
15. Electrical connections to:
^ Oxygen sensor.
^ Cylinder head.
^ Throttle body.
^ Intake manifold.
16. Rocker arms.
17. Throttle control cable bracket at throttle body and rocker cover. Connect cables at throttle body.
18. Spark plug wires.
19. Power steering pump.
20. Alternator and drive belt.
21. Lower air inlet duct and air inlet resonator.
22. Air cleaner and duct assembly.
23. Fill coolant system.
24. Negative battery cable and tighten bolt to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).
Inspect
^ For fluid leaks.
^ For proper completion of repair.
