This article has been updated with Bulletin No.: 63-50-11

EBTCM Internal Malfunction:

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
This DTC identifies a malfunction within the EBCM/EBTCM. The system is still operable with this DTC present.

DTC WILL SET WHEN
DTC 56 is set when an internal EBCM/EBTCM malfunction exists.

ACTION TAKEN
This is not a critical operational malfunction. The DTC is stored but no indicator lamps are turned

DTC CHART TEST DESCRIPTION
Number(s) below refer to circled number(s) on the diagnostic chart.
1. Checks to see if there are any other malfunctions present.
2. This checks to see if the malfunction is still present.

DIAGNOSTIC AIDS
When DTC 56 is displayed on the Tech 1, it will be followed by two more numbers which should be noted along with any other DTCs that may be displayed. The additional two numbers displayed with DTC 56 are for aiding Technical Assistance to determine the cause of the internal malfunction.

Possible Causes:
^ Solenoid short to voltage in the BPMV during initialization. If a solenoid DTC is present along with DTC 56, then pursue the solenoid DTC first.
^ An internal EBCM/EBTCM problem exists.

An "intermittent" malfunction is most likely caused by a poor connection, rubbed through wire insulation, or a wire that is broken inside the insulation. Make sure the integrity of the connection between the EBCM/EBTCM and the BPMV is secure, tight, and free from corrosion.

The frequency of the malfunction can be checked by using the enhanced diagnostic function of the Tech 1.

Any circuitry, that is suspected of causing the intermittent complaint, should be thoroughly checked for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, poor terminal to wiring connections or physical damage to the wiring harness.
