Frame and Field

Checking Field For Shorts:

Checking Field For Opens:

The armature must be removed from frame and field during these tests. Refer to "Starter Disassembly". Use a self-powered test lamp to check the field coils for a short or open circuit.

INSPECT
1. Assure that both positive (insulated) brushes are securely fastened to the field coil leads. Connect a self-powered test lamp between one positive brush and a clean metal ground on the frame. The field lead or other positive brush must not touch any grounded surface during the test. Repeat this test for the other positive brush. The lamp should not light for either test. If the test lamp lights, replace the frame and field.
2. Connect the self-powered test lamp leads between one positive (insulated) brush and field lead. Repeat this test for other positive brush. The lamp should light for both tests. If the test lamp does not light, replace the frame and field.
3. Assure that the two negative (ground) brushes are securely attached to the grounded brush leads. Connect the self-powered test lamp leads between the two negative (ground) brushes. The test lamp should light. If the test lamp does not light, replace the frame and field.

Brushes
Inspect
^ If any of the brushes are damaged or worn more than 90 percent, replace the frame and field. If the brushes are not damaged and still have more than 10 percent of the brush material left, use a soft cloth to clean the contact face of the brushes.
