System Alignment

Exhaust system hangers are designed to minimize noise transfer through hangers. If the system contacts the body, or the hanger is restricted, vibration and noise can be transmitted into the vehicle. Position clamps and insulators so that hangers are vertical when the exhaust system is at operating temperature. The support brackets should be horizontal. If it is necessary to reposition pipes, heat may be used in front of rear suspension. The support brackets should be horizontal. Allow pipes to cool before touching them. DO NOT use acetylene torch near fuel tank. After adjusting hangers or repositioning pipes, check the entire system for adequate clearance to frame members and floor pan, minimum 15 mm (5/8 inch). Tighten all clamps according to specified torque's. Clearance is needed to avoid possible overheating of the floor pan and possible damage to the passenger compartment carpets. The weight of the exhaust system should be evenly distributed on all brackets and hangers as indicated by an equal deflection at each hanger.
