Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is mounted to the transaxle assembly and produces an AC signal. The frequency of this signal is proportional to the speed at which the transaxle assembly output shaft rotates, which in turn is proportional to the speed of the vehicle.

The AC signal produced by the VSS is supplied to the PCM. The PCM converts the VSS input into a 4000 pulse per mile signal that is transmitted to the cruise control module, instrument cluster, and radio (Chevrolet only) through circuit 817.

Once the VSS signal is received by the cruise control module, instrument cluster or radio, it is converted into a usable form to monitor vehicle speed.
