Drum Brake System: Adjustments

- J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge





1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange in order to insure proper balance upon reassembly.
3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
4. Remove the brake drum. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle flange in order to ensure proper balance upon reassembly.
5. Measure the drum inside diameter (ID) using the J 21177-A
6. Turning the wheel star, adjust the shoe and lining diameter to 0.76 mm (0.030 inch) less than the inside diameter for each rear wheel.
7. Install the brake drum, aligning them to the marks made during removal.
8. Install the tire and wheel.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Apply the brake pedal 30-35 times.
Wait one second between each application in order to self-adjust the drum to shoe clearance.
