Transmission Replacement

Removal Procedure

Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in Service Precautions.





1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
3. Disconnect shift control cable from the shift lever.





4. Remove the shift control cable from the bracket and reposition the cable.





5. Remove the upper transmission line at the transmission and the lower transmission line at radiator.





6. Remove both heater tube retainers from the upper case side cover studs.
7. Remove the electrical connector from the coolant temperature sensor (1).
8. Remove the ground wire (2) from the stud near the rear transmission to engine brace.





9. Remove the upper nuts (1) from the rear engine to transmission brace (2).





10. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
11. Disconnect the left front wheel speed sensor (3) and remove harness from retainer.
12. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor from the transmission.
13. Disconnect the power steering gear electrical connector at the gear.
14. Lower the vehicle.





15. Disconnect the transmission vent hose at transmission.





16. Carefully pull the wiring harness up from beneath the vehicle and set aside.
17. Reposition the engine harness at the top of the transmission to access the upper transmission bolts.
18. Remove the upper transmission bolts.
19. Install the engine support fixture.
20. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.





21. Remove the engine frame.
22. Remove the left and right drive axles from the transmission.
23. Remove the exhaust heat shield at the transmission brace on right side.





24. Remove the right side transmission to engine brace bolts.





25. Remove the rear upper transmission to engine bolt.





26. Remove the front engine to transmission pencil brace.
27. Remove the three ground connections at the front of the transmission.
28. Disconnect the transmission main harness.





29. Remove the engine oil pan to transmission bracket.
30. Remove the torque converter cover.
31. Remove torque converter bolts.





32. Remove the left transmission bracket from the case side cover.
33. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.





34. Remove the front lower transmission bolt.
35. Separate the engine and transmission.
36. Lower the transmission down and towards the left on a slight angle so the transmission case can clear the end of the starter.
37. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the transaxle into the vehicle and align the engine alignment dowels (1, 6).

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.





2. Install the front lower and rear upper transaxle case to engine bolts.
^ Tighten the lower transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).





3. Install the right transaxle bracket to the case side cover.
4. Install the bracket to transmission mount nut.
^ Tighten the lower transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).





5. Install the transaxle brace to engine.
^ Tighten the transaxle brace to engine bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft. lbs.).





6. Install the exhaust heat shield at the transmission brace on right side.

Important Align the mark made on the torque converter with the mark made on the flywheel made in the disassembly unless installing a new converter.





7. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
^ Tighten the flywheel to torque converter bolts to 63 Nm (47 ft. lbs.).





8. Install the torque converter cover.
9. Install the engine to transmission case bracket.





10. Install the front engine to transmission pencil brace.
11. Install the three ground connections at the front of the transmission.
12. Connect the transmission main harness.

Important Use care when installing the right side drive axle into the transaxle case. The splined shaft of the drive axle can easily damage the seal.





13. Install the left drive axle and the right drive axle to the transaxle.
14. Install the engine frame.
15. Lower the vehicle.
16. Install the upper transaxle case to engine bolts.
^ Tighten the upper transaxle bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).





17. Connect the shift control cable to the bracket and the shift control cable bracket.
18. Check adjustment of the shift cables. Re-adjust as needed.
19. Connect the transaxle electrical connector.
20. Install the air cleaner assembly.
21. Connect the negative battery cable.
22. Check and adjust the transaxle fluid level.
23. Road test the vehicle and check for transaxle leaks.
24. Check front end alignment.
