SYMPTOM/CONDITION

A buzzing noise originating in the steering column area. This noise is most audible during acceleration just prior to 1-2 upshift.

NOTE: VEHICLES BUILT AFTER OCTOBER 15, 1982 SHOULD NOT EXHIBIT THIS CONDITION.

DIAGNOSIS

Determine if the noise is caused by the shift linkage by loading the shift lever. If noise is eliminated, then follow the repair below.

PARTS REQUIRED

Spring Clip PN 6500596
Adjustment Swivel PN 4188437

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Check to see if the shift linkage swivel spring clip is applying tension. Replace spring clip and/or adjustment swivel if tension is not observed.

2. Bend the torque shaft mounting bracket as necessary to eliminate clearance between the bushing and the torque shaft.

3. Assemble using Mopar Multi-Purpose Grease, PN 4318063, at the torque shaft bushing and the adjustment swivel..

4. Install and adjust per service manual.
