Removal and Replacement


The transaxle and converter must be removed and installed as an assembly since the converter drive plate, pump bushing or oil seal may be damaged. The drive plate will not support a load. Do not allow the weight of the transaxle to rest on the drive plate during removal.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect throttle control cable at carburetor and transaxle.
3. Disconnect inhibitor switch electrical connector, fluid cooler hose and 4 engine to transaxle top attaching bolts.
4. Raise and support vehicle and remove both front wheels.
5. Remove under cover and drain transaxle fluid.
6. Remove ball joints from front lower arm.
7. Remove right and left drive axles from transmission case. Replace drive shaft retainer ring with a new ring on reassembly. Do not damage drive shaft boots.
8. Disconnect speedometer cable and remove starter motor.
9. Remove coupling bolt at each end of front roll rod.
10. Remove converter cover housing, then 3 bolts connecting converter to drive plate.
11. Force torque converter toward transmission.
12. Attach suitable holding fixture to engine, support transaxle on jacks and remove remaining engine to transaxle attaching bolts.
13. Remove transaxle mounting bracket nuts, then transaxle and torque converter as an assembly from under vehicle.
14. Reverse procedure to install. Install transaxle and converter as an assembly. Temporarily tighten coupling bolt at each end of front roll rod. After installation has been completed, torque front roll rod upper and lower bolts to On 1984 models, torque front roll rod upper bolts to 22-29 ft-lbs., and front roll rod lower bolts to 36-47 ft-lbs.
