The subject models are available with a 5-speed manual transaxle which has an electronically controlled fifth gear. The select control valve, which controls the select actuator, is controlled by one of three different types of control relays. Refer to Chart 1 for the specific control relay application.

Each of the control relays has a different detection system. The conditions under which each relay starts to activate the select control valve are listed below.

NOTE: THE SELECT CONTROL VALVE SWITCHES VACUUM APPLIED ON THE SELECT ACTUATOR ACCORDING TO A SIGNAL SENT FROM THE CONTROL RELAY. THE SELECT ACTUATOR THEN SHIFTS HIGH AND LOW GEARS ON THE INPUT SHAFT.

1. A Type

^ Ignition switch is put into ON position.

^ Select switch is energized "On" when transmission control lever is shifted into fifth gear, and "Off" in any other lever position.

2. B Type

^ Engine is running to generate a voltage at "L" terminal of alternator.

^ Select switch is energized "On" when transmission control lever is shifted into fifth gear, and "Off" in any other lever position.
3. C Type

^ Vehicle is moving at a speed faster than 6 mph (10 Km/HR).

^ Select switch is energized "On" when transmission control lever is shifted into fifth gear, and "Off" in any other lever position.
