Engine: Service and Repair

1. Remove battery and battery tray, then remove air cleaner assembly.
2. Detach purge control valve hose bracket from battery support, then disconnect hose from valve.
3. Remove windshield washer tank, cooling system reservoir and evaporative emissions canister.
4. Drain cooling system, then remove radiator and engine cooling fan.
5. Disconnect accelerator cable, clutch cable and speedometer cable.
6. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
7. Disconnect PCV valve vacuum hose and on California models, disconnect high altitude compensator vacuum hose.
8. Disconnect carburetor bowl vent purge hose.
9. On models with automatic transaxle, disconnect selector lever control cable, throttle control cable and neutral safety switch wire connector at transaxle.
10. Disconnect wiring from starter motor, alternator, water temperature switch, ignition coil, high temperature sensor and oil pressure switch. Also disconnect coil high tension lead and engine ground cable.
11. On models with manual transaxle, disconnect back-up light switch wire connector at transaxle.
12. Remove ignition coil.
13. Raise and support front of vehicle, then drain fluid from transaxle.
14. Remove under cover, then detach lower arm ball joint and strut bar from lower arm. Position lower ball joint on lower arm to prevent damage to dust boot.
15. Insert a suitable pry bar between transaxle case and axle shaft joint outer case. Move pry bar to the right to withdraw left hand axle shaft, to the left to remove right hand right shaft from transaxle case. Support axle shafts at a suitable position. Cover transaxle axle shaft openings with a cloth. When detaching axle shaft from transaxle case, do not insert pry bar more than .28 inch, otherwise oil seal may be damaged. Before the axle shaft is reinstalled, the shaft retainer ring should be replaced.
16. Remove transaxle assist and control rods.
17. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold and suspend from frame with wire.
18. Remove front roll rod to bracket attaching bolt, then the rear roll stopper attaching bolt.
19. Support engine using a suitable engine lifting device.
20. Loosen transaxle mount bracket bolt, then remove engine mount bracket nuts.
21. Remove transaxle mount bolt and engine mount insulator bolts, then the transaxle mount insulator from fender shield.
22. Remove engine mount bracket from engine, then the engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle. When removing engine and transaxle assembly from vehicle, use care not to allow transaxle to come in contact with battery bracket.
23. Reverse procedure to install. Temporarily tighten front roll rod attaching bolts and nuts, then after the weight of the engine and transaxle has been placed on the insulators, tighten front roll rod bolt to 22-29 ft. lbs. and front roll rod to bracket bolts to 29-36 ft. lbs. This will prevent axial force from being applied to roll rods.
