SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Disc brakes squeak during stopping.

DIAGNOSIS

Road test vehicle to verify condition. Before proceeding with repair, be sure to check for other sources of noise as outlined in Trouble Shooting list on page 5-5 of either the 1984 or 1985 Conquest Service Manual.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 Pad Kit, Front PN MB500465

REPAIR PROCEDURE

NOTE: THIS PROCEDURE APPLIES ONLY TO CONQUESTS BUILT BEFORE MARCH 25, 1985 WITHOUT AN INTERCOOLER, OR BEFORE FEBRUARY 25, 1985 WITH AN INTERCOOLER.

Front

1. Refer to the Brake Pad Replacement Procedure on page 5-19 of the appropriate Conquest Service Manual for removal of brake pads.

2.. Remove and discard the original brake pads and outer shim.

NOTE: BEFORE INSTALLING THE NEW BRAKE PADS, NEW SHIMS COATED WITH GREASE FROM FRONT PAD KIT, PN MB500465, MUST ALSO BE INSTALLED AS OUTLINED IN STEPS 3 THROUGH 6. FIGURE 1 PROVIDES A REFERENCE AS TO SHIM AND PAD POSITIONING.
3. Prepare the shims for assembly by taking the three shims from the pad kit and appling a thin coating of the special grease contained in the kit to one side of each shim.

4. Assemble an outer pad and shim "sandwich" by stacking the outer pad, with its friction material face up, on top of one of the rubber coated shims, with its greased side also facing up.

NOTE: WIPE AWAY ANY EXCESS GREASE WHICH OOZES FROM BETWEEN THE SHIM AND PAD.

5. Assemble an inner pad and shim "sandwich" by stacking the inner pad, with friction material face up, on top of the second rubber coated shim, with the greased side up, on top of the non-coated shim, with its greased side up.

NOTE: WIPE AWAY ANY EXCESS GREASE WHICH OOZES FROM BETWEEN THE SHIMS AND PAD.

6. Install brake pad and shim "sandwiches" into position as shown in Figure 2, using the brake pad installation procedure as outlined in the appropriate service manual.
