SUBJECT: Customer Satisfaction Recall #353: 318-4 BBL Police Car Driveability
MODELS: 1984 Plymouth Gran Fury and Dodge Diplomat Passenger Cars with Police Package and 318-4 BBL Engine
REFERENCE: My memo to Zone Managers, Service and Parts Sales, dated March 8, 1984.
The subject service requirement is to correct unsatisfactory driveability conditions on the above listed models. There are 335 vehicles involved.
Parts are being shipped directly to fleet operators with complete instructions for the necessary modifications. Operators are requested to arrange for the service to be performed by dealers of their choice.
Enclosed are copies of the letter and instructions sent to fleet operators. Also enclosed are listings of the involved vehicles, sorted by district and dealer code.
POLICE CAR DRIVEABILITY
DEALER SERVICE, REPORTING AND REIMBURSEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Service Procedure
1. Disconnect battery.
2. Drain coolant from radiator. (Save coolant.)
3. Remove air cleaner and set aside.

4. Remove charge temperature switch and discard. (See Figure 1, Item A)
5. Tape charge temperature switch wiring connectors back into harness.
6. Remove coolant temperature sensor. (See Figure 1, Item B)
7. Apply an even coat of sealant to the threads of the temperature sensor and to the supplied pipe plug (use Mopar Spray Gasket 160 Sealer - Part No. 4318035 or equivalent).
8. Install supplied pipe plug in former coolant temperature sensor location. Tighten to approximately 20 foot pounds.
9. Install coolant temperature sensor in former charge temperature switch location. Tighten to approximately 20 foot pounds.
10. Carefully remove coolant temperature sensor wire from wiring harness bundle back to the plastic clip. (See Figure 1, Item C)
11. Connect coolant temperature sensor wiring connector to relocated sensor. (See Figure 1, Item D)
12. Tape rerouted wires into harness and retape harness and both ends of convolute tubing.
13. Install air cleaner.
14. Remove spark control computer module and replace with supplied module. The module is located under the instrument panel just to the right of the parking brake.
Note: For easy access to replace the spark control computer module, remove the module and its mounting bracket as an assembly.
15. Replace engine coolant.
16. Reconnect battery.
Customer Satisfaction Notification - 1984 Plymouth and Dodge Police Car Driveability
Dear Fleet Operator:
Our records show that you are the operator of 1984 model year Plymouth Gran Fury or Dodge Diplomat police cars equipped with 318-4 BBL engines.
Your satisfaction with our product is of prime importance to us. For this reason we are notifying you that special modifications are available for the subject vehicles to improve both cold and warm engine driveability. Parts for the required service have been shipped to you with this letter, for installation by any Chrysler-Plymouth or Dodge dealer. This service will be provided to you without charge.
The required service will include installation of a new spark control computer module and other modifications. These are detailed in the Service Procedure Section on page 2 of this letter.
Please make an appointment with any Chrysler Corporation dealer for the necessary modifications. Deliver the parts to the dealer along with the enclosed Claim Forms showing the Vehicle Identification Numbers of the vehicles being repaired. Also provide this letter to the dealer as Chrysler's authorization to have the service performed free of charge. The service will take about one hour for each vehicle.
NOTE: One claim form was placed in the envelope attached to your parts package to serve as a mailing address. This and all other claim forms enclosed in the parts package must be saved. Their use is further explained in the Completion Reporting and Reimbursement section on page 3 of this letter.
If you have any problem obtaining this service, please contact the Chrysler Zone Office in your area. (It is listed under "Service Assistance" in your Operator's Manual.) The Zone Office will arrange for prompt servicing of your car.
We regret any inconvenience which this action may cause you. However, we believe that the repair will help to ensure your continuing satisfaction with our product. Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter.
Completion Reporting and Reimbursement
The dealer must submit a claim for each vehicle, using the DIAL System or Copy 2 of the Recall Claim Form for our record of completion and for dealer payment. If neither of these methods is available, the claim may be submitted on a WRO. (See Chapter 6, Warranty Policy and Procedure Manual, for complete claim processing instructions.)
If using a WRO, enter only one claim on it. Fill in the labor operation number and time allowance and identify the claim as "Recall #353 - 318-4 bbl Police Car Driveability. Do not include other non-recall claims on the same WRO.
