Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Cylinder head must be cool prior to removal to avoid cylinder head distortion.
1. Drain cooling system.
2. Remove intake and exhaust manifolds from cylinder head.
3. Remove rocker arm cover.
4. Loosen and remove cylinder head bolts evenly in sequence, Fig. 3. Rocker arm supporting brackets are located on dowels and are retained by head bolts. Only brackets 2 and 4 are pinned to rocker arm shaft.
5. Tie rocker arm assembly together with suitable wire, then remove, Fig. 4.
6. Remove pushrods, noting location of each to facilitate installation, and the cylinder head.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Refer to Fig. 5 for cylinder head bolt tightening sequence. Bolts are to be torqued progressively to 52 ft. lbs.
