Recall - Excessive CO and Exhaust Manifold: Overview

90chrysler11 No. 464

May, 1990
To: All California Dodge and Chrysler-Plymouth Dealers

Subject: California Emissions Recall #464 -- CO and Exhaust Manifold

Models: 1986 Plymouth and Dodge Colt Equipped With a 1.5L Carbureted Engine and California Emission Control System

The listed model passenger cars may emit carbon monoxide in excess of the California Emissions Standards. In addition, exhaust manifolds may be cracked on some vehicles. To correct the condition, the following steps are required:

^ Install a carburetor choke shim to provide leaner choke operation

^ Install an intermediate harness to modify the secondary air system

^ Inspect the exhaust manifold for cracks and replace it as required

^ Install recall completion label

Caution:

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) will be performing an audit of vehicles serviced for this recall.

Failure to perform all steps of the recall service procedure completely and accurately may cause emissions noncompliance. The CARB considers failure to properly perform emissions recall procedures to be a violation which may subject the servicing dealer to a significant fine.

Details of this service action are explained in the following sections. As an additional service aid, a videotape demonstrating the service procedure is included in the March, 1990 Master Tech program.

Vehicle List

Each dealer to whom involved cars were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive a vehicle list with this letter arranged in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. Owners known to Chrysler are also listed. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved cars.

Each California Dodge or Chrysler-Plymouth dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail for use in performing the service on involved cars upon request.
Recall Completion Label Requirement

There is a California Air Resources Board requirement to affix a label to the vehicle to certify that the emissions recall was completed. A label is included in each parts package. Refer to the Service Procedure of this letter for application instructions.
