EMISSIONS RECALL1986 PLYMOUTH OR DODGE COLT WITH 1.5 LITER ENGINE SOLD IN CALIFORNIA
Dear Chrysler Import Vehicle Owner:
It has been determined that your 1986 Chrysler import car, with a 1.5 liter engine, may be in violation of California Emissions Standards. Carbon monoxide levels could be above the allowable limits, which were established to protect the public health from the dangers of air pollution. For this reason, we are asking you to return your vehicle -- identified by the Vehicle Identification Number on the enclosed form -- to your dealer for a special service repair. The service and parts as described in this letter will be provided free of charge.
The needed instructions have been sent to all Chrysler-Plymouth and Dodge dealers in California. The service will not hurt your engine performance or fuel economy. Your dealer is ready to serve you now. To obtain this service:
^ Contact your dealer as soon as possible to make an appointment for the free service.
^ Take the enclosed Owner Recall Notification Form with you at the time of your appointment and give it to your dealer. The form identifies the vehicle and recall for which service is required.
^ The dealer will recalibrate the carburetor choke, modify the emission system to inject additional air into the exhaust gas stream, and inspect the exhaust manifold for cracks. Cracked manifolds will be replaced. The service will take about one and one-half hours, but additional time may be required depending on how service work is scheduled and processed.
The State of California requires that every vehicle must pass an emission test every two years and before it is sold. Without the free service we are providing, your vehicle may be more likely to fail this test and require that you make costly repairs.
We regret any inconvenience this action may cause, but trust you understand our interest in clean air and in your continued satisfaction with our products. If you experience any difficulty in obtaining the corrective service, please contact the Chrysler Zone Office in your area. (It is listed under "Service Assistance" in your Operator's Manual.) The Zone Office will take the necessary action to ensure prompt correction of your vehicle.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter.
