Removal and Replacement

1. Remove battery, then the battery tray.
2. On turbocharged vehicles, remove air cleaner case.
3. On all models, disconnect kickdown cable at engine side, then the control cable from transaxle.
4. Disconnect inhibitor switch connector, oil cooler hoses, then the speedometer cable from transaxle. Plug end of oil cooler lines to prevent entry of foreign material.
5. Disconnect starter motor harness, then remove transaxle to engine attaching bolt at upper portion of transaxle.
6. Remove starter motor, then raise and support vehicle.
7. Remove under cover, then drain transmission fluid.
8. Remove stabilizer bar from lower control arm, then the lower arm at body side.
9. Remove and properly store right and left drive shafts, then the bellhousing cover.
10. Remove three converter to drive plate attaching bolts by turning torque converter using a suitable box end wrench to bring one bolt to an appropriate position suitable for removal, then remove remaining bolts in same manner.
11. Push torque converter toward transaxle, then support transaxle using a suitable jack.
12. Remove remaining engine to transaxle attaching bolts, then the bolt from transaxle mount insulator.
13. Remove mount bracket from transaxle, then slide transaxle to the right and lower from vehicle.
14. Reverse procedure to install. Install transaxle and torque converter as an assembly. Torque transaxle attaching bolts as shown, Fig. 33.
