Removal and Replacement

Fig. 33 Transaxle attaching bolt locations & torque specifications:





1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery and battery tray.
2. Remove radiator reservoir tank and air cleaner housing.
3. Disconnect throttle control cable from carburetor, and the control cable at transaxle and transaxle mounting bracket.
4. Disconnect inhibitor switch connector, pulse generator connectors, solenoid valve connector and speedometer cable from transaxle.
5. Disconnect oil cooling hoses at transaxle, then plug hoses and openings at transaxle.
6. Disconnect starter motor electrical connectors and remove starter.
7. Disconnect engine wiring harness and battery cable from transaxle and transaxle mounting bracket.
8. Raise and support vehicle.
9. Remove front wheels and drain transaxle fluid.
10. Remove strut bars and stabilizer bar from lower arms.
11. Remove driveshafts as follows:
a. Remove dust cover and driveshaft nut.
b. Disconnect lower arm from No. 1 crossmember.
c. Insert pry bar between transaxle case and driveshaft and pry driveshaft from transaxle. Do not pull on driveshaft or insert pry bar deep enough to damage oil seal.
12. Remove bellhousing cover, then remove 3 bolts connecting converter with drive plate.
13. Remove 5 upper transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
14. Support transaxle with suitable jack and remove lower transaxle to engine attaching bolts.
15. Remove transaxle mount insulator bolt.
16. Slide transaxle assembly to right, then lower and remove from under vehicle.
17. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install torque converter first to transaxle and then to engine.
b. Fill transaxle to specifications.
c. Adjust throttle control cable and control cable.
d. Ensure inhibitor switch wiring harness does not contact transaxle insulator cable.
e. Ensure engine starts only if selector lever is placed in Neutral or Park.
f. Install new circlips on driveshafts and ensure driveshaft washers are properly installed.
g. Torque driveshaft nut to 144-188 ft-lbs.
h. Torque other bolts as shown, Fig. 33.
