1. Drain cooling system and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove alternator, carburetor air cleaner and fuel line, then disconnect accelerator linkage.
3. Remove vacuum control hose and distributor cap and wires.
4. Disconnect coil wires, heat indicator wire, heater and bypass hoses.
5. Remove closed ventilation and evaporation control systems, then cylinder head covers.
6. Remove intake manifold, coil and carburetor as an assembly.
7. Remove exhaust manifolds.
8. Remove rocker arm and shaft assemblies, refer to ROCKER ARMS.
9. Remove pushrods. During disassembly note location of pushrods so they can be installed in the same position.
10. Remove cylinder head bolts and cylinder heads.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install cylinder heads and tighten bolts to specifications in sequence shown in Fig. 4. 5.2L/V8-318 engines have cylinder head bolt holes drilled through the block into the water jacket in certain locations, Fig. 5.
Cylinder head bolts in these locations must have sealer 4057989 or equivalent applied to the threads to prevent engine coolant leakage. Ensure old sealer is cleaned from the threads before applying new sealer.

b. Install intake manifold, tighten all bolts finger tight, then torque bolts to specification in sequence shown in Fig. 6.
