Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair

1. Disarm airbag, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair.
2. Remove left and right side A-pillar trim by disengaging retaining clips.
3. Remove left and right cowl side trim panels as follows:
a. Remove four scuff plate/cowl panel assembly attaching screws, then the cowl side trim panels.
4. Remove glove box assembly as follows:
a. Open glove box door, then disconnect check strap.
b. Remove glove box switch and light by pulling rearward, then disconnecting wiring connectors.
c. Remove six attaching screws, then the glove box assembly.
5. Remove four relays located above glove box assembly.
6. Reach through glove box opening, then disconnect A/C heater control vacuum lines, radio noise suppressor wires and blower motor/cycling switch wires.
7. Remove hood release handle.

8. Remove lower steering column cover as follows:
a. Disconnect parking brake release rod from parking brake.
b. Remove fuse panel access door, then remove one screw from lower column cover.
c. Remove six screws from lower cover, four across top of panel and two on bottom, then remove lower steering column cover.

9. Remove lower left instrument panel silencer and reinforcement as follows:
a. Remove two screws from front of silencer.
b. Remove one push nut, then disconnect courtesy lamp and remove silencer.
10. Remove instrument panel center bezel by pulling straight back, disengaging five clips.

11. Remove floor console as follows:
a. Place transaxle shifter in N position.
b. Remove both side carpet panels from front console.
c. Remove two screw cover plates from rear console.
d. Remove coin holder, then the two rear console-to-front console attaching screws.
e. Remove two rear console-to-mounting bracket screws, then the rear console assembly.
f. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, remove shift lever bezel as follows: (1) Remove two screws, then pull up to remove automatic transaxle shift knob; (2) Lift shift lever bezel from front to unsnap from console, then disconnect wiring harness and remove shift lever bezel.
g. On models equipped with manual transaxle, remove shift lever bezel as follows: (1) Unscrew shifter knob from shifter; (2) Remove nut, then lift ring from shaft; (3) Lift shift lever bezel from front to unsnap from console, then remove shift lever bezel.
h. On all models, remove two console-to-mounting bracket screws.
i. Remove six console-to-instrument panel screws.
j. Slide console assembly rearward to unlatch console from instrument panel, then remove console assembly.
12. Remove radio assembly as follows:
a. Remove radio mounting screws.
b. Pull radio from panel, disconnect wiring, ground strap and antenna lead from radio, then remove radio.

13. Remove A/C heater control as follows:
a. Remove two A/C heater control mounting screws.
b. Slide A/C heater control rearward, disconnect temperature control cable and wiring, then remove A/C heater control.
14. Remove cigar lighter assembly as follows:
a. Remove two screws from lighter assembly.
b. Pull lighter assembly rearward, disconnect wiring, then remove lighter assembly.
15. Remove message center/traveler as follows:
a. Remove four attaching screws.
b. Pull unit rearward, disconnect wiring, then remove message center/traveler.
16. Disconnect demister hoses.

17. Remove instrument panel top cover as follows:
a. Lift up rear edge of instrument panel top panel up.
b. Remove panel by pulling rearward.
18. Remove nuts attaching steering column bracket to instrument panel support and lower bracket support, then lower steering column.
19. Loosen instrument panel pivot bolts.
20. Remove screws attaching instrument panel to cowl panel.
21. Allow instrument panel to roll down slightly, then disconnect remaining electrical connections.
22. With the aid of a helper, remove panel pivot bolts, then the instrument panel from vehicle.
23. Reverse procedure to install.
