Removal and Replacement
Tightening Specifications:
1. Drain transaxle fluid into a suitable container, then remove transaxle oil level gauge.
2. Disconnect battery cables, remove battery and battery tray.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly and reservoir/windshield washer fluid tank if necessary.
4. Disconnect oil cooling lines from transaxle. Plug lines and openings to prevent contamination.
5. Disconnect throttle control cable, speedometer cable and all electrical connectors from transaxle.
6. Disconnect starter motor wiring and remove starter motor.
7. Raise and support vehicle.
8. Remove dust cover, stabilizer bar and strut bar.
9. Remove driveshafts from transaxle as follows:
a. Loosen ball joint stud nut, then disconnect ball joint from steering knuckle using separating tool No. MB991113 or equivalent.
b. Loosen tie rod end stud nut, then disconnect tie rod from steering knuckle using separating tool No. MB991113 or equivalent.
c. Pry righthand driveshaft, then lefthand driveshaft out of transaxle case using two suitable screwdrivers. Do not insert screwdrivers far enough to damage oil seal.
10. Remove driveshaft circlips from transaxle case.
11. Remove bellhousing cover attaching bolts and remove the cover.
12. Remove three torque converter to driveplate attaching bolts, rotating flywheel as necessary. After removing attaching bolts, push torque converter into transaxle to avoid leaving the converter in the engine.
13. Remove transaxle mounting bracket as follows:
a. Scribe hood hinge locations and remove hood.
b. Lift engine slightly using suitable engine lifting equipment to relieve pressure from mount insulators.
c. Support lower portion of transaxle with a suitable jack, and remove mounting bracket.
14. Remove transaxle attaching bolts, slide transaxle to the right and carefully lower assembly from vehicle.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install torque converter first to transaxle and then transaxle to engine.
b. Fill transaxle to specifications.
c. Adjust throttle control cable and control cable.
d. Torque other bolts as shown, Fig. 6.
