2 Wheel Drive
Prior to engine removal, start engine, disconnect electric fuel pump connector and allow engine to run out of fuel to relieve residual fuel system pressure.
WARNING: Failure to relieve fuel system pressure prior to disconnecting fuel system components may cause fire or personal injury.
1. Remove battery, then the engine ground, radiator fan motor connector, engine harness connector and battery tray.
2. Remove battery tray installation bracket, then drain engine coolant and transmission fluid.
3. Discharge A/C refrigerant, then drain the power steering fluid.
4. Remove radiator reservoir tank, then the windshield washer reservoir.
5. Disconnect transaxle oil cooler hoses on vehicles equipped with automatic transaxles, then plug hose openings.
6. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine side, then the heater hoses.
7. Remove firewall ground cable, then the air cleaner.
8. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose, then the high tension cables from coil and spark plugs.
9. On vehicles with manual transaxles, disconnect clutch cable from transaxle.
10. On vehicles with automatic transaxles, disconnect control cable from transaxle and transaxle mounting bracket.
11. On all models, disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle, then the accelerator cable from engine.
12. Disconnect right fender engine ground, then the A/C hoses from compressor, if equipped. Cap compressor and hose openings to prevent foreign matter from entering.
13. Disconnect power steering hoses from pump, then the pressure switch connector, if equipped.
14. Disconnect alternator electrical connector, then the oil pressure switch.
15. Remove vacuum control unit and solenoid valve attaching screws, then disconnect electrical connector.
16. Disconnect purge control valve hoses, then loosen canister body clamp and remove hoses.
17. Disconnect fuel return hose from carburetor, then the main hose from fuel filter.
18. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect and support front exhaust pipe.
19. On vehicles with manual transaxle, remove shift rod, then the extension and range selector cable.
20. On all models, disconnect left and right strut bars, then the stabilizer bars from lower arms.
21. Remove left and right lower arms to No. 2 crossmember attaching bolts, then the drive shaft from transaxle. Plug case openings to prevent foreign matter from entering and replace driveshaft retaining ring after each removal.
22. Secure lower arms and drive shaft to No. 2 crossmember, then attach a suitable lifting device to engine.
23. Slightly raise engine, then remove left mount insulator nut.
24. Remove front roll insulator nut and heat protector bolt then the rear roll insulator protector bolt.
25. Remove left mount insulator to fender attaching bolt, then the power steering oil reservoir, if equipped.
26. Remove cap from right inner fender shield, the insulator bracket attaching bolts and bracket, then remove, in sequence, the select control valve attaching bolts and valve, wiring connector and vacuum hoses.
27. Lift engine until no weight is applied to mountings, then remove insulator bolts from rear roll stopper, front roll bracket and left mount bracket.
28. Remove engine/transaxle assembly from vehicle.
29. Reverse procedure to install.
