DISCUSSION:
This supplemental information is being provided to assist technicians in correctly diagnosing the automatic seat belt system which has several unique function modes. This bulletin provides an explanation of how the system operates and a chart showing the unique function modes.
Operation of Automatic Seat Belts
The automatic seat belts operate as follows:
1. The belts fasten around the occupant when the front door is closed when the ignition switch is in the ON position.
2. The belts release from around the occupant when the front door is opened and the ignition switch in the ON, LOCK or ACC positions.
3. The belts stop moving toward the B-pillar if the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK or ACC position or when the front door is opened during belt motion.
4. The belts in the front seat positions operate independently of each other.
Operation During Belt Motion
Belt Fastening Motion
1. If the belt is not in the fastening position (the L.H. or R.H. door latch switch will be at the Door Closed Position; the L.H. or R.H. "Fasten" switch at the ON position) when the door is closed with the ignition switch in the ON position, the belt automatically moves to the fastening position. For the period between the initiation and completion of the belts motion in the fastening direction, the seat belt warning light will either stay on or blink. When the belt is completely fastened, the "fasten" switch is switched OFF and the motor stops.
2. The motor is protected by a timer and will shut off in approximately 60 seconds if a foreign object gets into the mechanism.
Belt Releasing Motion
1. When the belt is not in the release position, the L.H. or R.H. release switch is in the ON position, and the left or right door is open, the belt will automatically move to the release position if the ignition switch is at either the ON, LOCK or ACC position.
Also the driver's side seat belt will automatically move to the release position if the key is removed from the ignition while the belt is fastened.
The buzzer will sound for approximately 0.7 of a second when the belt starts to move. When the belt completes the releasing motion, the L.H. or R.H. release switch is turned OFF, and the motor stops.
2. If the belt is still in the process of releasing with a time lapse of approximately 60 seconds after the start of motion, the protective timer in the control unit is activated causing the motor output to be shut off. At the same time, the buzzer sounds for approximately 0.7 of a second.
