Recall - Reprogram Flexible Fuel Vehicle PCM: Overview

No. 716

October, 1997

To: All California Dodge and Chrysler/Plymouth Dealers

Subject:
California Emissions Recall # 716 -- Reprogram Powertrain Control Module

Models:
1993 Model Year Dodge Spirit and Plymouth Acclaim (AA) Vehicles Equipped With a 2.5L Flex Fuel Engine ("V" in the 8th VIN Position) and California Emission Control System Built Through May 13, 1993 (MDH 051318)

California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations require Chrysler Corporation to obtain additional Non-Methane Organic Gases (NMOG) credits to be in compliance. The flexible fuel vehicles (FFV) listed above were originally certified to CARB Tier 0 standards. Regulatory compliance can be achieved by updating these vehicles to a Transitional Low Emission Vehicle (TLEV) configuration. To accomplish this, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) must be reprogrammed (flashed) and a new VECI label must be installed.

Important:
This recall is subject to the State of California Registration Renewal/Emissions Recall Enforcement Program. Involved vehicles must have the recall service completed before registration renewal.

The servicing dealer must provide a Vehicle Emission Recall Proof of Correction Form (Form No. 81-016-1053) to each owner upon completion of the recall service, for use as proof in renewal of the vehicle registration.
