Air Temperature Sensor ( Ambient / Intake ): Description and Operation

Intake Air Temperature Sensor:

PURPOSE
The ECM modifies fuel injection duration according to the intake air temperature signal.

OPERATION
- The ECM supplies a 5 Volt reference and a ground to the sensor.
- The Intake Air Temperature Sensor is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor--the resistance of the sensor increases as temperature decreases.
- As the resistance of the sensor changes the voltage across the sensor varies. This voltage is read as air temperature by the ECM.
