Defroster - Poor Overall Performance

NO: 24-04-95

GROUP: Heating & A/C

DATE: Feb. 10, 1995

SUBJECT:
Defroster Operation/Improvement

MODELS:
1995 (PL) Neon

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Customer complaint of poor defrosting on the driver's side or poor overall defroster performance.

DIAGNOSIS/DISCUSSION:

Verify with the customer the operation of the circulation control knob position when in the defrost mode. As stated in the Owners Manual, the circulation control must not be in the "RECIRCULATE" mode position in humid/cold weather or the windows may fog or moisture will build up inside the vehicle. For maximum defogging, use the "OUTSIDE AIR" position on the circulation control.

If the heater-A/C system is being used correctly, proceed to the following repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

AR 5264604 Lower Defroster Duct Seal (for vehicles built prior to
Feb. 1, 1994 (MDH 02-01-XX).

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves removing the instrument panel top cover and verifying and/or repairing the upper and lower defroster duct assembly.

1. Remove the instrument panel top cover by lifting up on the bottom outer areas of the cluster bezel and along the rearward edge of the top cover to disengage the clips. Pull the top cover and cluster bezel rearward until the forward pins disengage from the instrument panel.

2. Before removing the upper defroster duct, look down into the duct and feel inside to see if it is aligned and sealed to the lower defroster duct.

3. Remove the upper defroster duct by pushing the outer finger on the right retaining tab forward while pulling upward on the duct. Then pivot the duct up toward the left to unlatch the left side hook tab (See Illustration).

3. Lightly attempt to lift the lower defroster duct upward. It will appear loose, but should not separate from the heater-A/C housing. If it lifts off, do not remove the lower duct, but carefully align it to the heater-A/C housing and press down firmly to secure the two snaps. This view of the assembly may not be visible from the top of the instrument panel (See illustration for cutaway view).

Note
IF THE VEHICLE WAS BUILT PRIOR TO FEB. 1, 1994 (02-01-XX) THE SEAL BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER DEFROSTER DUCT WILL REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.

4. If the defroster duct seal is loose or sloppy or is a required replacement part based on vehicle build date, use P/N 5264604 seal and attach it to the lower defroster duct (See Illustration).

5. Re-install the upper defroster duct by inserting the left hook tab and pivoting the duct down to the right. Before locking the right side tab, make sure the duct is centered on the lower duct seal surface. Lock down the right tab.

6. Re-install the instrument panel top cover. Make sure the four fingers underneath the top cover engage with the instrument panel before snapping in place at the rear edge.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
