Moaning Noise from Front Brakes

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 05-16-94 REVISION A DATED JAN. 13, 1995 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES OR NOTED IN THE 1994 TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN MANUAL (PUBLICATION NO. 81-699-95054). THIS IS A COMPLETE REVISION.

THIS PROCEDURE REVERTS BACK TO THE ORIGINAL REPAIR OUTLINED IN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 05-16-94 DATED SEPT. 9, 1994 TO REFACE THE FRONT DISC BRAKE ROTORS. IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE REVISED REPLACEMENT DISC BRAKE ROTORS MAY CONTRIBUTE TO AN INCREASED BRAKE SQUEAL, WHICH IS NOT COVERED IN THIS BULLETIN.

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH FOUR (4) STUD HUBS, SALES CODES BRC OR BRH.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A low frequency moan or growling noise that can be heard when stopping during moderate to heavy braking. The sound varies with vehicle speed and usually occurs when braking above 45 MPH.

DIAGNOSIS:

With the windows closed, radio and the HEVAC system off, road test the vehicle on a smooth road surface and apply the brakes heavily from a speed of 45 MPH. Avoid skidding the tires. If the noise is heard, proceed with the following repair.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves refacing the front disc brake rotors to remove a fine ripple in the surface.

NOTE:
THIS PROCEDURE SHOULD ONLY BE USED FOR CORRECTION OF BRAKE MOAN AND IS MORE EFFECTIVE ON VEHICLES THAT HAVE ACCUMULATED AT LEAST 500 MILES.

1. Remove the disc brake rotors as outlined in the 1995 Neon Service Manual (Publication No. 81-270-5025), Page 5-45.

2. Follow the instructions for refacing the brake rotor on Pages 5-46 through 5-47. Using the slowest feed rate, remove only .002" or the least amount of material required to contact the entire braking surface.

3. After the refacing operation is completed, resurface the brake rotor with a grinder to create a swirl finish on the braking surface.

NOTE:
REPLACEMENT OF BRAKE PADS IS NOT REQUIRED.

4. Install the disc brake rotors back onto the vehicle.
