NO: 23-02-98GROUP: Body
DATE: Jan. 30, 1998
SUBJECT:
Front Door "Snapping" On Fender Cladding
MODELS:
1998 (LH) Intrepid
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
"Snapping" noise when either front door is opened. The noise may be mistaken as the door check strap.
DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the front door to lower fender/cladding for signs of contact, gap and flushness (Figure 1). The gap must be 5.0 mm or greater in the area of concern. Inspect for the presence of four lower cladding attaching clips. If any clips are missing, install clip(s) and snap into the body opening. If there are signs of contact or the gap requirements are out of specification, perform the Repair procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
AR 04783805 Shim, Fender
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves adjusting the lower cladding and/or shimming the lower fender outward.
1. If the door to lower fender/cladding gaps are less than 5.0 mm, loosen the cladding screw at the B-pillar (Figure 2). Screw is behind the weatherstrip. Slide the cladding forward until the gaps in the area of concern are 5.0 mm or greater, tighten the cladding screw and replace the weatherstrip.
2. If the 5.0 mm specification cannot be achieved by the efforts of step # 1, loosen the lower fender attaching bolt (Figure 3) and move the lower portion of the fender forward to get the 5.0 mm. Tighten the lower fender attaching bolt.
3. If steps # 1 & # 2 do not result in a 5.0 mm gap in the area of concern loosen the lower fender attaching bolt (Figure 3), insert shim(s), p/n 04783805, as necessary until the fender is 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm overflush to the door at the area of contact. Tighten the lower fender attaching bolt while biasing the fender forward in the slot.
